Bao Yuehong hadn't bought a house; she simply rented a small place. When the truck arrived, Yang Tian was taken aback. The house that Bao Yuehong had rented was right next door to the one Yang Tian shared with Huang Juan.
It was a privately built house. Downstairs lived the landlord; on the second floor, there were two spacious rooms. Yang Tian and Huang Juan lived on the right, and the left room had always been empty. A few days earlier, Yang Tian had overheard the elderly landlady mention that someone would soon move in, but he never imagined that person would be Bao Yuehong.
“Amazing, isn't it? The environment here is wonderful, isn't it? When I first found this place, I was overjoyed. It's so peaceful, the hygiene is excellent, and best of all, there's a lotus pond behind the house. Standing by the window and looking out, it's pure enjoyment!” Bao Yuehong was all smiles. Yang Tian wondered what expression she would have when she realized that her neighbors were him and Huang Juan—and that they lived together.
Bao Yuehong was lavish in her praise for the place, but Yang Tian only smiled quietly. How could he not know about the environment here?
“All right, stop standing there like a fool. Help me set up my new home!” After admiring the place for a moment, Bao Yuehong started moving things inside.
Yang Tian broke out in a cold sweat. He knew that secrets couldn't be kept forever. He hadn't gone to An Qi’s family restaurant yet, and Huang Juan was bound to return soon. When she did, the three of them would have to face each other. It would be quite a scene.
“Xiao Tian, what are you doing? Why haven’t you gone to eat yet? Oh, and I’ve decided to give An Qi a bag of sour plum powder. What do you think?” Sure enough, Huang Juan bounced in a few moments later, quickly ascending to the second floor and fishing out her keys.
She had just grabbed a bag of sour plum powder when Bao Yuehong emerged from the room next door. The two bumped into each other, both startled, while Yang Tian just smiled and shook his head. What was meant to happen would happen; they were neighbors now and would meet sooner or later.
“Ms. Bao?!” Huang Juan blushed and smiled.
“Huang Juan?! You live here?” Bao Yuehong was momentarily surprised, then smiled and asked. She was, after all, an adult—calm and composed.
“Yes, I live with Yang Tian…” Huang Juan trailed off suddenly, unsure whether to admit she lived with Yang Tian. Even though they simply shared a room, separated by a curtain, the school seemed to forbid such arrangements.
---
“You live here with Yang Tian?!” Bao Yuehong paused, then cast a mischievous glance at Yang Tian.
“Well…” Yang Tian scratched his head.
“All right, enough explanations. I’ve already heard about you two—engaged since childhood, special circumstances. I won’t interfere much, just mind your boundaries!” Bao Yuehong interrupted, then continued moving her things.
Yang Tian was stunned. He wasn’t sure what Bao Yuehong meant by “mind your boundaries”—perhaps she was reading too much into things.
“No, Ms. Bao, it’s not what you think. We just share a room, two beds, separated by a curtain!” Huang Juan hesitated, then quickly explained, moving to Yang Tian’s side to help Bao Yuehong settle in.
“I know, I was teasing you. I know neither of you are that kind of person! From now on, we’re neighbors—let’s look out for each other!” Bao Yuehong gave a gentle smile and patted Huang Juan’s head.
“How about this, Ms. Bao: you and Huang Juan share a room, and I’ll take the other one. I’ll pay rent for both!” Yang Tian suggested tentatively.
“No way! I talk in my sleep, I’d disturb Ms. Bao!” Huang Juan protested, then shot Yang Tian a reproachful glance, clearly blaming him for the silly idea.
“Huang Juan and I share a room? Would you really let her? Haha!” Bao Yuehong looked at Huang Juan, then grinned mischievously at Yang Tian.
“Is that something a teacher would say?” Yang Tian thought to himself, shaking his head. Truthfully, he feared that living with Huang Juan for too long might be problematic—not because he didn’t want to, but because he was an adult. Every time he saw Huang Juan walking around in her pajamas, those vulgar thoughts would creep into his mind.
He was afraid that someday, he might lose control and do something wrong.
“By the way, I’ve already accepted Yang Tian as my younger brother. Huang Juan, from now on, call me sister. It’ll be easier for us all to live together! Don’t worry, teachers are people too—ordinary people. Just treat me as your sister, and don’t let my arrival change anything!” Bao Yuehong seemed to notice Huang Juan’s embarrassment and smiled encouragingly.
“All right, sister!” Huang Juan was easygoing; with Bao Yuehong making it so clear, she didn’t refuse. The two quickly hit it off, leaving Yang Tian on the sidelines.
---
What surprised him was that Bao Yuehong also liked sour plum powder. The room hadn't even been organized yet, but the two "sisters" sat on the sofa, sharing the powder—truly like a pair of twins.
While sorting clothes, Bao Yuehong gave Huang Juan a bright red lace dress, saying she couldn’t wear it anymore and that Huang Juan could use it as a nightgown.
Huang Juan’s favorite color was red, so she accepted it immediately. After coming back from dinner at An Qi’s family restaurant, she even brought Bao Yuehong a pound of dumplings. Their relationship developed quickly.
Seeing this, Yang Tian let out a sigh of relief. With these two women busy with each other, he could get back to his own affairs.
“Xiao Tian, come here!” In the evenings, Bao Yuehong would always call to Yang Tian from next door. Since Huang Juan called him Xiao Tian, she did too—sometimes to give him fruit to share with Huang Juan, sometimes to ask his opinion on little things: does this dress look good, should this item be placed here, and so on.
Meanwhile, Huang Juan mischievously lay against the wall or stood at Bao Yuehong’s doorway, eavesdropping on their conversation. Yang Tian could easily spot her, and Bao Yuehong could too, but neither said anything. Occasionally, they exchanged smiles; after all, Huang Juan was a young girl, and her little secrets were perfectly normal.
“Xiao Tian, Ms. Bao is so sexy—her figure is amazing!” As she was getting ready for bed, Huang Juan put on the dress Bao Yuehong had given her, standing on her bed and posing, then whispered to Yang Tian, “Do you think I look good in this dress?”
“You look wonderful. If you like it, I’ll buy you ten more tomorrow!” Yang Tian looked up with a smile, then returned to his computer. He didn’t dare look too long. Now that they were in high school, Huang Juan was still a young girl, but her body had matured nicely. With the special bond he had with her, his heart always beat faster around her.
“Really? So tell me—do I look better in it, or does Ms. Bao?” Huang Juan delightedly jumped down from her bed, came up beside Yang Tian, and asked softly.
“You both look great!” Yang Tian replied absent-mindedly, not looking up.
“No, you have to pick one!” Huang Juan insisted, her words carrying a double meaning.
“You have to pick one?” Yang Tian understood the implication and smiled, “Well, you look a little better!”
