Chapter 111: The Triumph of the God of War

The old commander Zhao and Xiao Tianci knew the atmosphere was off the moment they saw the doorway. The general saluted Zhao solemnly. Zhao responded with a heartfelt gesture and smiled brightly, “Success! You’re back so soon—why not rest a few more days?”
Success was a man who had achieved countless military feats but had been sidelined and frustrated for years until Zhao spotted his potential and promoted him beyond protocol. Within a few years, he had already risen to the rank of major general.
“Reporting, old commander, I can’t stand being cooped up in a convalescent home like that,” Success replied.
Zhao chuckled, “Look at you, a general now, yet still the same.”
When Xiao Tianci returned, Meg immediately ran over. Seeing her, Xiao Tianci gently stroked her head, realizing he needed to find a way to help her become more independent; she couldn’t always be like this.
At that moment, Zhao introduced, “Tianci, let me introduce you—this is General Success, an undefeated legend in the military.” Then he turned to Success, “This is Xiao Tianci, the grandson of an old friend of mine.”
Success didn’t need an introduction; he recognized Xiao Tianci instantly. Even a stern-faced soldier like him was momentarily stunned before saluting, and then the two shook hands.
“An undefeated legend in the military—Success is a fitting name,” Success mused inwardly. He was, of course, aware that Xiao Tianci was the new boss of the Golden Steel, that prodigal son.
After some polite conversation, Xiao Tianci said to Zhao, “You keep busy. I’ll be going now. I’ll visit again when I have time.”
Zhao said meaningfully, “I’m looking forward to your good news.”
Xiao Tianci smiled and left without another word, followed by the others. When Golden Steel passed by Success, he cast a hostile glance at him. Success returned a murderous look. Golden Steel left the military restricted zone with his boss.
Zhao looked over Success appreciatively from head to toe, nodding, “Not bad, not bad. You’ve recovered well. Didn’t the doctor say it would take four months? You didn’t sneak out on your own, did you?”
Success snapped to attention and produced his discharge certificate, “Rest assured, old commander, I obey orders and will never desert.”
Zhao took the certificate, examined it carefully, then handed it back with relief. “Good, very good. Come inside and talk.”
On the plane, Xiao Tianci asked about the earlier events. The chief steward explained the situation. Xiao Tianci looked at Fire Phoenix, who turned her head away, refusing to meet his gaze. He could only shake his head—no one could match that wild girl and the chief steward.
Still, this time everything went smoothly. Not only did the plan succeed as intended, but they also gained insight into the higher-ups’ attitudes and thoughts. This was crucial—it was the key to understanding the situation. If the United States or that other country really wanted to deal with him, he wouldn’t even have the ability to defend himself now.
Since the other side was maintaining balance and watching, this was his best opportunity. The biggest threat was the U.S., so giving them a little sweetness to keep them temporarily stable was wise. Now it was just a matter of moving forward with the original plan.
Ha…ha…haha… The best thing today was realizing that even they couldn’t figure him out. That made things easier, fitting perfectly with his plan. It would be more thrilling and crazier to play bigger, winning amid chaos.
As he pondered these matters, he suddenly recalled the earlier scene—Golden Steel and that so-called undefeated legend seemed to know each other.

“Golden Steel, you know that Success guy?”
Golden Steel nodded, lost in thought. “We’ve clashed before. That was when I was an undercover ghost, sent to sabotage a hydroelectric station that the Xiao family was cooperating on with the Z country government. Because that station was critical and I couldn't reveal my identity, I relayed the info to the boss and joined the mission under the lead of one of their commanders.”
“The boss leaked the info to the Z government. They sent Success, then deputy captain of the Martial Arts Special Action Unit, to lead a team to sabotage our operation.”
Golden Steel paused, then said, “At that time, unless it was a special mission, members acted as true ghost operatives and had to perform flawlessly.”
Xiao Tianci nodded understandingly. “That’s the best way to complete a mission and protect oneself, but it’s difficult, isn’t it?”
“Yeah. The two teams clashed, and Success killed our leader. The Martial Arts Special Action Unit was incredibly strong; everyone we sent was killed. Luckily, at the brink of death, I transformed for the second time and… I killed all sixteen operatives on that mission, including his younger brother, Cheng Qiang. In the end, it was just the two of us left to fight.”
Golden Steel stopped, and Fire Phoenix and Meg both asked, “What happened then?”
“Honestly, I didn’t expect it either, but I became the ghost’s most trusted subordinate after that. He already knew the information was leaked and was watching throughout the entire battle to find out who the traitor was.”
The ghost’s heart was ruthless, his methods cruel. Without someone like Golden Steel, no one could have deceived him.
Golden Steel expressed admiration. “But Success was really strong. When I had just transformed for the second time, I still wasn’t his match. Just as he was about to kill me, the ghost saved me, severely injuring Success but letting him escape.”
Golden Steel’s words were simple, but everyone listened with bated breath. Fire Phoenix thought, “Oh, so he hit a wall. I didn’t expect Success to be so twisted—someone even stronger than Golden Steel.”
“What about now?” Fire Phoenix asked, unable to believe it, since Golden Steel’s third transformation was much stronger than his second.
Golden Steel shook his head. “I’m not sure. It’s hard to tell without real combat. Afterward, Success relentlessly hunted me. We fought many times. Turns out the ghost hadn’t given me all his energy, which made it harder for me to advance in cultivation. After that, he gave me all his cultivation techniques and guided me. After several rounds, we were evenly matched. I was improving fast enough to impress even the ghost, but Success somehow never lost. We kept fighting like that, becoming synonymous with bad luck.”
Wow, no way, no way—have to be more careful from now on. How come there are so many top fighters now? After all these years of fighting, I thought my brother was the best, but then came Golden Steel, this freak. Now there’s someone who defeated Golden Steel? Impossible! How did they train?
Meg listened intently. “Why? Are you guys unlucky?”
Golden Steel shook his head and explained, “Not us. Everyone who goes on missions with us is unlucky. We’re evenly matched, but in every fight, no one from either side survives.”
Everyone broke out in a cold sweat. Even Meg said, “With you two like that, who’d want to go on missions with you?”
Xiao Tianci laughed, patting Meg’s head. “That’s why, Meg, you have to take good care of the people around you—including your own team. Uncle Golden Steel had no choice back then.”
Meg nodded firmly. Xiao Tianci then turned to Golden Steel. “So how was it resolved in the end?”
That was the crucial question. Golden Steel had killed Success’s brother, so revenge was inevitable. But since they hadn’t fought recently, there must have been a story behind it.

“After the ghost was defeated, I returned to the Xiao family. Success was already the captain of the Martial Arts Special Action Unit. Because of his status, he learned the news and immediately came to the Xiao family. His position wasn’t challenged. When he showed up demanding to kill me, I wasn’t there. He caused havoc at the Xiao family. By then, his power was roughly equal to my third transformation. Luckily, there were many strong people in the Xiao family. After a fierce battle, much was destroyed, and over a dozen people were injured, but he was finally captured.”
“That incident shocked everyone. Even so, the boss didn’t punish him harshly, only hoping he wouldn’t trouble me anymore. He said there was no choice then and was willing to offer compensation in other ways. But Success was proud and refused to bow. In the end, the boss reluctantly had most of his martial arts skills crippled and then let him go. Although neither the boss nor I wanted to deal with him again, his old enemies took advantage of the moment to exile him to a border post.”
Xiao Tianci already suspected this was why Success had grown stronger again and was promoted by Zhao. It seemed to be a matter involving Zhao and the boss.
Fire Phoenix exclaimed, “What? He was crippled? But you just said you didn’t know who was stronger!”
Golden Steel confirmed, “He was crippled once. Usually, someone in that condition can’t fully recover, let alone become stronger. At best, he recovered fifty percent. But he not only recovered, he became stronger. He earned many merits fighting terrorists and separatists and combating drugs on the border. Though suppressed, he earned the reputation of an undefeated war god. Then Zhao discovered him, promoted him, and knowing the whole story, brought us four together—Zhao, the boss, Success, and me. Because the boss spared Success and Zhao was his benefactor, they mediated. Success agreed not to pursue it further.”
“Whew…” Fire Phoenix exhaled deeply. What a story! Success was truly formidable. Thinking of when he stole people from me, Fire Phoenix vowed to remain calm in the future—though when trouble comes...
“I see. No wonder he’s a general now. I never imagined the army had someone like him,” Xiao Tianci said regretfully. “If only he weren’t in the military or Zhao’s favorite, or a general, we’d have to find a way to recruit him. Such a talent is rare.”
Someone who could match or surpass Golden Steel was truly hard to find. Yes, I have to look for more talents. I heard some of Golden Steel’s friends are working on something and can’t come yet. Whatever they’re doing must be impressive for Golden Steel to notice. What could these people be up to?
It seems there are still many strong people in the world. Golden Steel is powerful, but then there’s that old monster he wants to challenge, those with special abilities, and others like Success hidden in the military and government. Damn, this world is truly strange and wondrous!
In business, my own skills are less useful. If someone has better business sense than me, that’s helpful. Oh right, I just remembered—special abilities. But then again, relying on others might be risky; they could plant bombs.
Training from childhood is one way, but it’s a massive project with long returns—not worthwhile. Another plan is to cultivate experts myself—more suitable. Also, strengthening those around me. I’m the weakest, but I’ve been too busy lately. When I have time, I’ll continue practicing the Xuanyuan Art. Fire Phoenix must be more stable; Meg is out of the question. For now, Golden Steel is the strongest force, but we must address his weaknesses and make him even stronger—that’s a general who can defeat ten thousand troops.
As Xiao Tianci pondered, the chief steward handed him a phone. “A call from the boss’s wife!”
“Heh, the wife misses me, huh?”
On the phone, Tian Ni’s voice was stern: “Where are you?”
Xiao Tianci suddenly remembered, checked his watch. She must be home already. Looking outside, he realized he was almost there. Hastily, he said, “Honey, I’m right above you! Flying over now…”
