I said to Xu Xin, “Give me your phone; I’ll call your sister.” Xu Xin scratched her head with a mischievous grin and said, “My phone… I accidentally dropped it when I escaped this afternoon, and it broke!”

Broken? No wonder all the calls to her earlier couldn’t get through. I had no choice and got into the small driveway. “Then let’s go to your house to call. I wonder what your sister wants this time?”

Once inside the villa, I found a phone and immediately dialed Xu Shu’s number. After a few rings, she answered, “Hello?”

I said, “Xu Shu, I’ve already brought your sister back. Are you coming home soon?”

But Xu Shu replied, “Uncle Li? Oh, hello! Hmm, I’m outside with a friend. What’s up?”

I paused momentarily and realized Hua Jingjing was beside her, making it inconvenient to talk. I said, “Alright, I’ll wait here. Hurry back!”

“Okay, I understand. I’ll be back soon!” I cut the call and turned to Xu Xin. “Your sister will be home soon. She told me to watch over you until she gets back, so you better behave!”

Xu Xin smiled slyly. “If it’s you, I’ll definitely behave.” She took my hand and whispered mysteriously, “Since my sister’s not home, come with me. I have something to tell you.”

I frowned. “Where are we going? Can’t you say it here?”

Xu Xin tugged me along. “People might come in here. It’s not convenient! Come on!”

Helpless, I followed her to the third floor and into a bedroom. The moment I stepped in, I felt uneasy and immediately turned to leave. Xu Xin grabbed my hand. “Come in! Why are you turning away?”

I shook her off firmly. “Say it outside. It’s not appropriate for a man and a woman to be alone in a room.”

Xu Xin laughed. “Really? You were holding me and kissing me just now, and now you’re pretending to be proper?”

My face flushed, and I had no comeback. “What happened just happened. Now is now. Your sister will be here soon, and I don’t want her to misunderstand.”

Xu Xin said, “Misunderstand what? I’m already your future wife. If she finds out, I’ll just confess!”

I rolled my eyes, annoyed. “Please, miss, you’re still a minor! If your sister discovers anything ambiguous between us, she’ll tear me apart. Besides, she knows about my girlfriend. If you tell her, she’ll think I’m fickle and untrustworthy.”

Xu Xin smiled. “Who said there’s anything ambiguous between us? Don’t jump to conclusions, okay? I want to talk about your girlfriend! If you think this isn’t the place, let’s go to the study.”

I smiled wryly. “What’s there to discuss about my girlfriend? There’s nothing between us. Who knows what will happen in five years? You might have already fallen for someone else. I’m not going to foolishly wait for you for five years.”

Xu Xin glared at me, biting her lip in anger. “I knew you didn’t take our promise seriously! I’m very serious about it! No way, you’re coming with me. We have to talk this through!”

She grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the study.

I thought it was time to bring some clarity to this little witch, so I didn’t resist. We entered the study, and I prepared to have a serious talk.

She closed the door behind us and commanded, “Tang Qian, sit down!” Her tone was stern; she didn’t even call me “brother.” This made me chuckle inwardly as I took a seat on the sofa.

Suddenly, her expression softened. She knelt down, resting her elbows on my knees, and whispered gently, “Brother Tang Qian, I know many women like you now! I’m still a student and can’t compare to them. Asking you to wait five years seems unrealistic. But you must believe me—I’m serious. I really like you, no less than those women.”

Seeing her so sincere, I had prepared a stern rejection but couldn’t bring myself to say it. I sighed instead. “I don’t doubt your sincerity, but think carefully—five years is a long time. Anything can change. You like me now because you’re young and naive; you don’t understand true love. When you grow up, you’ll regret it. You’ll realize how childish and ridiculous this affection is. I might be married and have children by then. Our promise is immature and will only harm both of us. You have to understand that.”

Xu Xin leaned her face against my leg, gently stroking it. “I understand. Who knows what the future holds? For now, you’re the only one in my heart. I love you so much, I don’t care about anything else.”

I said, “Xu Xin, you’re too naive. Knowing it’s impossible, you still like me?”

She raised her head. “That’s why we made a five-year promise. I’m okay with you having other women during this time. I know things will change after five years, and I might not be able to marry you. So I’m not asking you to wait foolishly—do whatever you want during these years. Date whoever you want; I won’t object!”

I asked, “Then what’s the point of the five-year promise? Isn’t it just empty words?”

“No! I mean, you can’t marry anyone within five years, but you can have women. If, after five years, I still love you, I’ll come find you!”

I asked, “And what if you don’t want me after five years? Wouldn’t you have waited in vain?”

Xu Xin laughed confidently. “After five years, I won’t be who I am now. I’ll be more beautiful and charming than my sister, more graceful. I believe that no matter which woman you’re with then, I’ll win you over. Even now, you secretly like me. You’re just scared and feel guilty about your current girlfriend, so you’re slapping yourself around, aren’t you?”

I was speechless. The little witch was half right—I was indeed scared and confused. But my heart only belonged to her sister. As for why I felt happy and even a little fond toward her, my thoughts were in a mess. I needed time to think it through.

I sighed again and unconsciously stroked her head. “Let’s talk about this in five years. I can’t promise you anything now. Don’t get your hopes up too high, or you’ll regret it.”

Xu Xin knelt down, wrapping her arms around my waist and pressing her face to my stomach. She hummed softly, “I don’t care about five years from now. While I still love you, just let me hold you a little longer.”

My heart was torn. I knew I was hurting this innocent girl, yet I didn’t know how to avoid her. Rejecting her now would hurt her immediately, and rejecting her later would still hurt. And yet, the happiness in my heart only grew stronger—I was almost bursting with joy. I felt an urge to hold her tightly and cherish her.

Before my last shred of conscience was extinguished by dark thoughts, I trembled and said, “Xu Xin! Don’t do this! Your sister will be back soon. Get up!”

Xu Xin hummed again but didn’t move. Summoning courage, I pushed her away and strode outside. In the corridor, I lit a cigarette and took a deep drag.

I finally understood—I was a shameless man, weak-willed and unscrupulous, harboring impure intentions. Moments ago, I was regretting myself, but faced with Xu Xin’s deep affection, I couldn’t help but entertain wicked thoughts. I wanted to slap myself hard to wake up this scoundrel inside me.

At the study door, Xu Xin’s head popped out, smiling brightly. “Brother Tang Qian! Angry again? Don’t hit yourself, okay? Xin will be heartbroken!”

I groaned painfully, thinking, “God, please don’t let me see this little witch again, or I’ll go mad!” I suddenly realized how fitting her nickname was—not only was she devilish in behavior, but she also possessed magic that unknowingly bewitched one’s heart.

Xu Xin laughed a little, then walked up to me. “Alright, no need to blame yourself. I know you’re conflicted—liking me but unwilling to admit it, right? It’s okay. I’ll give you time. I was truly scared of this little witch’s affection. As long as it wasn’t about feelings, everything else was manageable. I controlled my emotions and said, “Fine, after your sister gets back, I’ll leave.”

Xu Xin found the kitchen staff and had them prepare dinner. Shortly after, Xu Shu returned.

Xu Xin smiled as she ate. “Sis, you really should reorganize your bodyguards and gates. What tight security? A garbage truck passed without any checks. What if someone sneaks something out?”

Xu Shu’s expression darkened. “So I should thank you for exposing the flaw?”

Seeing her sister’s displeasure, Xu Xin dared not say more and focused on eating.

Xu Shu continued, “Looks like I really can’t keep an eye on you. Tomorrow morning, I’ll have someone escort you back to school. You should be attending classes.”

Xu Xin lowered her head and softly said, “Okay.”

Seeing there was nothing left for me, and that watching the sister scold her little sister was pointless, I interrupted, “Xu Shu, my task is done. Please send a car to take me back.”

Xu Shu’s bright eyes finally met mine. “You? Don’t leave yet. I still have some scores to settle with you!”
