Chapter Twenty-Four: The Wilds

Hua Jingjing glanced under the table and said, “Looks like an ID card. Whose is it? You’re really something, making such a fuss. Gave me a fright.”
I pretended to know nothing, bent down, and picked up the ID card. After looking at it, I feigned surprise, “Oh? Turns out it’s mine. How did it end up here?”
Hua Jingjing leaned over for a look, sneered, “Careless people, even their ID cards aren’t kept properly. Losing it serves you right.” Embarrassed, I replied, “Sorry! Sorry!” Then I slipped the ID card into my pocket and sat down at my seat.
The Man with the Wig continued leafing through the proposal, smiling, “President Hua, your secretary is really quite amusing!” His secretary, Miss Luo Jiaxiang, covered her mouth, quietly giggling.
Hua Jingjing shot me a glare, then said to the Man with the Wig, “President Chen, please don’t mind. My secretary is always like this. How do you feel about the proposal?”
The Man with the Wig closed the document. “Not bad. The plan is detailed and creative. After reading it, I’m very optimistic about the prospects of our cooperation. I’ve decided to sign the contract. When will you bring the cooperation agreement for me to review?”
Hua Jingjing was delighted. “So, President Chen, you agree to our partnership? Then, let’s toast to a pleasant future between Green Lady and Fuhua Supermarket!” She stood, raising her glass.
The Man with the Wig and his secretary also stood and raised their glasses, their gazes converging on me.
I smiled coldly to myself, thinking: The real show is about to begin.
I stood, raising my glass as well. The Man with the Wig said, “And for our successful collaboration ahead—cheers!”
“Cheers!” We clinked glasses and drained them in one go. As I tilted my head back to swallow the wine, I watched from the corner of my eye as Hua Jingjing drank the switched glass. I thought, “Trying to harm others only to fall victim yourself. Now you’ll taste your own medicine. But what exactly did you put in it? What reaction will it cause? Hehe! I’m really looking forward to it!”
After finishing the wine, I noticed a mysterious smile on all three faces. I knew exactly why, but played ignorant. When we sat down, Hua Jingjing called out, “Come on, eat! Waiter, more wine!”
The meal lasted a long time. While everyone chatted, I stuffed myself with delicacies I’d never tried, as if I hadn’t eaten in eight lifetimes. Abalone, fish maw—an absolute feast.
Seeing my voracious appetite, Hua Jingjing looked down on me but assumed I’d drunk her drugged wine, so she didn’t say anything. She simply waited patiently to see me make a fool of myself.
The meal dragged on, but curiously, Hua Jingjing showed no adverse reactions.
After the feast, the Man with the Wig rose to take his leave. When Hua Jingjing went to pay, I was shocked: the bill came to over twenty thousand yuan. Pure extravagance.

At the hotel entrance, as we shook hands goodbye, the Man with the Wig said to Hua Jingjing with deep meaning, “President Hua, I’ve agreed to the cooperation and met your requirements. Next, make sure everything your end is well managed. Don’t let anything unexpected happen.”
Hua Jingjing smiled, “Rest assured, President Chen. With me, nothing major will go wrong.”
The Man with the Wig laughed heartily and climbed into his Mercedes, just pulled up by his bodyguard. His secretary, before getting in, cast me a sympathetic glance, shook her head, closed the door, and the car sped away.
Hua Jingjing took out her phone, checked the time, and said to me with a smile, “Tang Qian, my first business deal was a success! I’m so excited. Whenever I’m excited, I want to go for a drive. Come with me—share my happiness. Actually, you contributed to this success, too.”
I thought: So the effects haven’t kicked in yet. She just wants to see me embarrass myself firsthand? Perfect—I want to see what happens to her soon, too. If she’s inviting me, I couldn’t ask for more.
So I said, “Sure, now that the deal’s done, don’t forget to give me a bonus.”
Hua Jingjing replied, “No problem. Let’s go, get in!”
We got into the Ferrari. Hua Jingjing, full of excitement, let out a cheerful cry and started the engine.
The Ferrari’s speed was as legendary as they say. Hua Jingjing merged onto the highway, flooring the accelerator. The car easily hit one hundred sixty kilometers per hour, shooting forward like a rocket.
I turned pale, gripping the door handle tightly, and shouted, “Why drive so fast? You’ll kill us! Ah—look out, we’re going to crash…”
Hua Jingjing giggled, expertly maneuvering the wheel, overtaking car after car without slowing down. I had no choice but to close my eyes and pray for divine protection, thinking: This lawless woman is insane! Driving so fast, not afraid of traffic police, but what about her own safety? If she keeps this up, she won’t need to drug me—I’ll die of fright. Oh God…
Thankfully, after a short while, she checked her phone again, slowed the car, turned off the highway, and entered a side road.
As she kept driving, I realized she’d brought us onto a dark, unlit path, surrounded by wilderness. We were far from the city, and at night, I had no idea where we were. There wasn’t a soul in sight, nor any signs of civilization.
I wondered, did she use some deadly poison? Planning to dump my corpse in the wilderness after I die? The heart of a woman is truly the most venomous! I couldn’t believe she’d go so far. But she drank the same drug herself—I didn’t want her to die. As much as she annoyed me, I couldn’t let her perish because of me. That wasn’t my intention. I couldn’t just stand by, so I needed to warn her to hurry to the hospital.
I turned to speak, but saw Hua Jingjing’s face twisted in pain, her brows furrowed. She asked, “Do you…do you feel a bit uncomfortable in your stomach?”
Seeing her change in complexion, I guessed the poison was starting to work. I didn’t know if there was still time to save her. The worst part was, I didn’t even know how to drive. I’d have to call for an ambulance, but where were we? I could only shake my head and sigh.

Hua Jingjing asked again, “You really don’t feel anything? Strange, my stomach feels terrible! How…how is this possible?”
I said seriously, “Your stomach hurts? Why shouldn’t it? At the dinner table, when you weren’t looking, I switched our wine glasses. I advise you to turn around and head back now—maybe it’s not too late.”
Hua Jingjing slammed the brakes, her face white with terror. She pointed at me, her voice trembling, “You…you…how could you? I…I…”
I replied sternly, “If you don’t want others to find out, don’t do it yourself! You tried to harm me, but ended up hurting yourself. You wanted to kill me, but drank the poison instead?”
Hua Jingjing shouted angrily, “Who wanted to kill you? It was just a strong laxative, you…you’re despicable!”
Hearing the word “laxative,” I asked, “Just a laxative? Then why did you bring me out here?”
Seeing her plot exposed, Hua Jingjing no longer bothered to hide anything. She clutched her stomach in pain, groaning, “You offended me! No one’s ever dared to make me suffer before. You…you’re so annoying, oh, it hurts… I only wanted to teach you a lesson by giving you the laxative. Then, when you couldn’t hold it any longer, I’d leave you stranded in the wild, unable to get back. But…I didn’t expect this!”
I was both angry and amused, but mostly relieved. Teasing her, I said, “That ‘little lesson’ of yours isn’t something most people could handle. Now you’re tasting the bitterness, aren’t you? Are you feeling the urge?” Hua Jingjing bit her lip, her face contorted, and snapped, “You win! Just wait! One day I’ll…oh, it hurts so much. Tang Qian! I…this isn’t over, I’ll make you pay…oh…”
Hua Jingjing finally couldn’t take it anymore. With a loud sound, she let out a foul-smelling fart. Her pale face instantly flushed red, her eyes brimming with tears of humiliation. I quickly rolled down the window, laughing, “So smelly! So smelly!”
Hua Jingjing burst into tears, big drops rolling down her cheeks. Wiping her tears, she started the car, gritting her teeth, “Don’t get cocky…I…this isn’t over! This isn’t over!”
I watched her in gleeful schadenfreude, feeling utterly delighted.
The Ferrari turned around and sped off at full throttle. Unfortunately, before long, another loud fart sounded from Hua Jingjing. I couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
Hua Jingjing slammed the brakes, flailed at me in a fit, crying, “You dare laugh! Laugh at me! I…I don’t want to live anymore, anyway…oh!”
Before I could react, Hua Jingjing doubled over again, clutching her stomach, her face starting to turn blue.
Three seconds later, she seemed to make up her mind, ignoring everything, opened the car door, and dashed wildly into the desolate wilderness…
