My Rebirth Legend

Cold December had officially arrived. This land south of the Yangtze was blanketed by the biting wind, and City C was no exception. The trees lining the streets had already been stripped bare, and everything seemed to herald the end of another year and the imminent arrival of the New Year.

I lounged comfortably across my desk, staring unabashedly at the beautiful Su Xin beside me, admiring the alluring contours of her chest.

Today, Su Xin was wearing an adorable, fluffy V-neck sweater decorated with a little lamb. On her, it looked so cute that I could hardly contain myself.

Perhaps sensing my lecherous gaze, Su Xin shyly tugged at her collar and shot me an annoyed look.

“What are you staring at? The exams are almost here, and you still can’t concentrate. Hmph! If you refuse to study, I’m going to study. Keep looking and I’ll poke your eyes out.”

“Heh-heh. It’s only because my darling wife is so beautiful. If it were anyone else, I wouldn’t even bother looking.” I gave her a mischievous grin, leaned close to her ear, and whispered, “Xin Xin, shall we go see a movie tonight? I’ll have Li Dabiao reserve a couples’ booth for us. Then we can…”

“Pervert. Honestly!” The moment Su Xin heard me, she naturally understood what I was planning. Couples’ booths were all the rage these days, and high school couples were always sneaking off to them, so she had heard about them as well. She cast me a shy glance, and when she saw my disappointed expression, she could not help giggling.

“You’re such a lecher. Xin Xin isn’t going anywhere like that with you.”

I was completely defeated and could only sigh glumly. Why did all those high school students love going to places like that? If only Su Xin had not known about them, my plan might have succeeded.

“Xiao Qiang, do you really want to go? If you do… then it’s not entirely impossible.” Seeing me turn away with a dejected look, Su Xin watched me nervously and spoke shyly. “But… we can’t let anyone know.”

“Really?” I turned around excitedly. “Actually, if you don’t want to go, forget it. We have plenty of time anyway. It’s not as if you can run away.”

“Who says I can’t? Hmph. Maybe I’ll be with someone else tomorrow.” Clearly determined to infuriate me, Su Xin flashed me a provocative smile.

“Oh, so you dare tease your husband? Hmph! I’ll have to discipline you according to family law!” I pretended to glare angrily at her, then quickly reached out and secretly gave her bottom, clad in tight trousers, a light smack. It made an almost inaudible sound.

“Ah…” Su Xin’s delicate face instantly flushed crimson. Her small hands swiftly pinched the flesh at my waist as she angrily protested, “All you ever do is bully me. I hate you!”

“Heh-heh. You’re my wife, so what does it matter? Even your father has already approved.” I deliberately gave her a smug, defiant look, completely unconcerned by the hand pinching my waist. I knew she could never bring herself to use any real force. A gentle girl like Su Xin could never be that violent—not like that other one…

The moment I thought of Chu Qitong, it suddenly occurred to me that I had rarely seen her since returning from the capital. I lowered my head toward Su Xin and asked, “Xin Xin, how has Chu Qitong been lately? I haven’t seen her in ages.”

“What’s wrong? Why are you so concerned about Qitong? Haven’t you had enough of arguing with her?” Su Xin seemed puzzled by my sudden mention of Chu Qitong. Then, as if she had thought of something, she gave me a meaningful look. “Wait. Something definitely happened between the two of you in the capital, didn’t it? Why does Qitong keep asking me about you, too?”

“Uh, no. I just haven’t seen her for a long time, so I was asking. Is there anything wrong with caring about your friend?” I avoided her gaze and answered evasively. Until I confessed what had happened between Chu Qitong and me, I could not let Su Xin discover it first.

“Oh, is that really all?” Su Xin was clearly unconvinced, but she soon smiled again. “All right, all right. I was only joking. Qitong has a boyfriend now, so there’s no point in worrying about her.”

“Heh-heh. Why would I worry about her? I was only…” I broke out in a cold sweat and finally let out a breath of relief. I was just about to casually agree with her when I suddenly froze.

“W-What? She has a boyfriend?”

How was that possible? How could Chu Qitong possibly have a boyfriend? Her first time had been with me. How could she possibly…

Su Xin looked at my panicked expression in surprise.

“Why are you so shocked? Is Qitong not allowed to have a boyfriend? Hmph. Don’t underestimate her just because she’s spoiled and acts like a natural-born heiress. She’s beautiful, and plenty of boys are after her.”

“Do you know who her boyfriend is?” I did not know why, but when I heard the news, my heart clenched painfully. The tearing sensation made it difficult to breathe. Still, I had to appear calm. I could not let Su Xin notice anything.

“Of course I do.” Su Xin nodded with a smile. “Qitong is my best friend. I was the first person she told about her boyfriend. Let me see… He’s apparently from another school, and he’s a high school student too. I hear his family has quite a bit of money, and he’s good-looking.”

I could no longer hear the rest of what Su Xin was saying. My heart was filled with endless, bitter laughter.

Chu Qitong, you foolish girl. You really are foolish. I know why you found yourself a boyfriend. You only did it to provoke me, didn’t you? You wanted to prove that boys were interested in you, didn’t you? Why would you do something like this? Aren’t you only degrading yourself?

“Xiao Qiang… Xiao Qiang? What’s wrong with you?” Su Xin was speaking when she realized that my thoughts had drifted far away. She frowned lightly and complained in a soft, petulant voice, “What are you thinking about? You aren’t listening to me at all.”

“Nothing…” My expression dark, I turned away and lay down on my desk. My good mood had been completely extinguished in an instant.

Only now did I realize how much I actually cared about that little devil. Was it because she and I had spent that night together? But, heavens, I swear I was drunk that night. I truly had no idea what it felt like. I was so frustrated…

“So, Xiao Qiang, tonight…” Su Xin’s face flushed as she gently tugged at my sleeve. But I was so lost in thought that I did not hear her. I suddenly turned to her and asked, “Xin Xin, how long have Chu Qitong and her boyfriend known each other?”

“Huh?” Su Xin had not expected me to abruptly change the subject and ask about that. Her bashful expression immediately turned to anger. She glared fiercely at me, then turned away with a cold huff.

“I don’t know. Go ask her yourself!”

“Uh…” I stared blankly at the now-angry Su Xin, who refused to look at me, completely unable to understand what had happened. How had she gotten angry so suddenly?

But I paid little attention to it. My mind was filled with images of Chu Qitong smiling beside another man. Her smiling face seemed to be staring at me, as though taunting me.

“Look. I’m going to make you envious. I’m going to make you jealous…”

After I pestered her relentlessly, Su Xin finally turned back. Her expression was cold as she said, “Xiao Qiang, tell me. Why have you suddenly become so concerned about Qitong? Have you really fallen for her?”

“N-No…” I immediately deflected the question. “Ha-ha, she’s your best friend, and she’s my friend too. It’s perfectly normal to care about a friend.”

That excuse was so clumsy that probably only a fool would believe it. Su Xin rolled her eyes at me. She seemed helpless, yet there was also a hint of jealousy in her voice.

“Fine, I won’t argue with you. I don’t know how long that girl has known him, but I do know that the fellow is called Wang Liang. I think he goes to Sixth High School. Qitong told me several times yesterday that she was going to have Western food with him…”

Before Su Xin could finish, I hurriedly interrupted her.

“Western food? Which restaurant?”

“Hmm, I’m not sure. I think it might be the one we went to last time. Yes, that’s the one. Qitong said the Western food there was pretty good.” Su Xin fixed her beautiful eyes on me, then suddenly revealed a knowing smile. “Darling… You aren’t planning to go break them up, are you?”

“Me? How could I? Don’t make things up. I’m only curious… Ha-ha. That’s enough, enough. Let’s listen to the lesson.” I deliberately glared at Su Xin, replied absently, and quickly turned away, pretending to stare intently at the blackboard.

Chu Qitong, you little devil. How dare you flirt with some young boy without my permission? Damn it! Just wait until I teach you a proper lesson!

I had already begun plotting how to ruin her date. Yet even I had not realized that, not long ago, I had still been hoping she would find herself a boyfriend.
