“Xia, what are you doing on this road? I thought your house was in the other direction,” I said, surprised, trying to suppress the unease in my heart as I stared at Xia Jianren, who glared at me menacingly from a short distance away. “Looks like you came here for me? Is there something you couldn’t say at school?”

“Hmph, save your breath. I made things clear enough to you last time in the government compound. Since you refuse to take the easy way and insist on the hard one, don’t blame me for showing no mercy! Tonight I’ll show you what happens when you don’t listen to me!” Xia Jianren’s face was dark as he jabbed a finger at me. “Xiao Qiang, who do you think you are? Su Xin is just your deskmate—you really think she’d fall for a penniless nobody like you? Look at yourself, look at those rags you wear. Do you really think you’re worthy of being friends with Su Xin? Pathetic!”

“What exactly do you want?” By now I understood he was waiting here to pick a fight—he was clearly lying in wait for me. Knowing his intent, my panic subsided somewhat. Though I didn’t stand a chance in a one-on-one fight, I wasn’t afraid either. I replied coldly, “Xia, mind your words and actions. Don’t think I’m scared of you!”

“Oh? Not scared? Good!” Xia Jianren smirked, clapping his hands. Suddenly, four thuggish-looking men emerged from both ends of the path. Two of them held club-like weapons, grinning wickedly as they stood behind Xia Jianren, while the other two slowly
