Chapter 10: The Promise
On the way back, Guan Yueyue was driving, but her mind kept drifting to matters from her past life, especially about Shen Zhi and Ming Ziluo.
Yuan Wu sat in the passenger seat, happily chatting beside her. "Third Miss, I never expected it— that sommelier turned out to be a doctor, and so gentle, with such a pleasant voice."
Guan Yueyue absentmindedly responded, "Oh."
Yuan Wu continued, "By the way, Third Miss, when you went to the restroom, he looked at some scans and asked me a question while prescribing medicine."
Guan Yueyue glanced at her. "What did he ask?"
Yuan Wu said, "He asked if the injury on my face was caused by you."
Guan Yueyue asked, "And how did you answer?"
Yuan Wu looked at her profile and replied, "Of course, I said no. But he seemed…"
Guan Yueyue prompted, "Seemed what?"
In a low voice, Yuan Wu said, "He seemed a bit doubtful."
Guan Yueyue smiled faintly without responding, continuing to drive.
Seeing that she wasn’t upset, Yuan Wu chattered on, every sentence revolving around Shen Zhi. Guan Yueyue grew annoyed and asked, "Does your foot not hurt anymore?"
Only then did Yuan Wu remember her injured foot. "Third Miss, what should I do?"
Guan Yueyue gripped the steering wheel and made a turn. "What else can you do? Come stay at my place first and heal your injury."
...
After settling Yuan Wu, Guan Yueyue returned home.
She found something absurd.
Her stepmother, Sheng Lan, had invited a soothsayer Taoist to perform a ritual in the living room.
The whole room was filled with smoke and incense.
"Yueyue is back," Sheng Lan said, immediately giving the Taoist a signal. The Taoist swung the Buddhist whisk toward Guan Yueyue, who caught it in her hand.
Sheng Lan hurriedly said, "Yueyue, don’t be reckless. I’ve noticed something strange happening in the house lately…"
"Brother," Guan Ye’s voice interrupted, "Mom says you’ve been acting weird lately, suspecting you’re possessed by some evil spirit and wants to cleanse you."
"Ridiculous!" Guan Yueyue shook off the whisk and went upstairs on her own.
Sheng Lan pointed at Guan Ye, "You talk too much!"
Guan Yueyue poked her head out. "Mom, I called Dad. He’ll be here soon."
Sheng Lan’s complexion changed; Guan Huiming detested all that supernatural nonsense.
Once Sheng Lan drove the Taoist away, Guan Yueyue smirked and went into her room.
She was about to review the new design concepts she had learned.
Just as she sat down, her phone rang.
It was Xu Ziyu calling.
"What’s up, Brother Ziyu?" she asked, careful not to call him that in front of Shen Zhi.
Xu Ziyu said, "The guy who serves drinks is bringing his girlfriend home tonight. My dad asked me to see if you want to come for dinner." Actually, Xu Ziyu wanted Guan Yueyue to come but was afraid she’d refuse, so he invoked his father’s name.
"The guy who serves drinks?" Guan Yueyue didn’t understand.
"That’s Shen Zhi," Xu Ziyu explained.
"Shen Zhi? Xu Ziyu, he has a name and surname—why call him the guy who serves drinks? Isn’t that a bit much?"
Xu Ziyu was startled. "Yueyue, why are you so mad?"
"I’m not mad. I just think it’s rude to call him that. Besides, he’s your brother. Don’t call him that anymore."
"Okay, okay, I’ll listen to you. So, are you coming tonight?"
Guan Yueyue paused, then asked, "How many people?"
"Just my dad, me, Shen Zhi, and his girlfriend. If you come, that makes five."
"Alright. I’ll come."
