Chapter Nine: Campfire and Starlight, Where Love and Hate Slowly Merge
The night fell like a vast expanse of black silk, slowly descending upon the grassland, enveloping the entire plain in an aura both mysterious and profound. At the center of the camp, Li Chengyin kindled a fire with his own hands. The dry wood crackled under the licking flames, sparks leapt joyfully, and with the gentle breeze, they floated upward like a troupe of twinkling spirits dancing gracefully in the air.
Li Chengyin and Xiao Feng sat quietly opposite each other, the flickering firelight casting shifting shadows across their faces, illuminating them in varying degrees of brightness and darkness.
A trace of nervous anticipation flickered in Li Chengyin’s eyes. His trembling hands were clasped tightly as if summoning the courage within himself. At last, he drew a deep breath and broke the silence.
“Xiao Feng, ever since the Battle of Danchi, my heart has been consumed by endless pain and remorse.”
His voice was low and hoarse, each word seeming to be painfully extracted from the depths of his soul. He lifted his gaze toward the distant darkness, his thoughts drifting back to that fiery moment amid the war.
“Between power and love, I once chose wrongly—I believed that gaining power would protect you, that it would bring you happiness. Yet, I did not foresee that I would be the one to destroy all the beauty we once shared.”
His eyes slowly returned to Xiao Feng’s, filled with regret and anguish.
“When I saw Danchi fall and A’weng perish by my hand, I finally realized the unforgivable sin I had committed. Countless nights I awoke in terror, haunted by the sorrow in your eyes—a gaze so piercing it felt like a blade driven deep into my heart, leaving me in unbearable pain.” Leaning slightly forward, his hands clenched involuntarily into fists.
Xiao Feng watched him silently, seeing the sincerity and torment in his eyes—a vulnerability she had never witnessed before.
Her brow gradually relaxed, and the coldness in her gaze softened into a subtle, almost imperceptible thaw, replaced by understanding and compassion. Though the hatred rooted deep within her heart had yet to fully dissipate, in this moment, her feelings toward Li Chengyin shifted ever so slightly.
He continued, “I know that no matter what I do, I cannot undo the harm I have caused you. But I want you to know that from beginning to end, my love for you has never wavered. Every day and night since then, I have longed for you and been tormented by regret over my actions.” His voice faltered, tears pooling in his eyes.
Xiao Feng’s lips trembled. She wanted to speak but found her throat constricted, as if choked by some unseen force. Inside, a fierce struggle raged: on one hand, the blood feud of Danchi made forgiveness seem impossible; on the other, the profound sorrow and remorse before her stirred a tender pity.
After a long pause, Xiao Feng finally spoke softly, her voice hoarse yet gentle:
“Li Chengyin, what you have done has caused me immense pain. I have told myself countless times to hate you forever, to never see you again. But when I saw you risk your life on the battlefield to protect me, and when I hear your heartfelt words now, I find myself at a loss.”
Her eyes revealed confusion and bewilderment.
Li Chengyin looked at her, a glimmer of hope shining in his gaze.
“Xiao Feng, I do not ask for your immediate forgiveness. I only hope you will grant me one chance—to spend the rest of my life atoning, to find my way back into your heart.”
Cautiously, he reached out his hand, longing to hold hers but fearful of rejection. His hand trembled slightly in mid-air.
Xiao Feng gazed at his trembling hand, a complex storm of emotions swirling within her. Slowly, she lifted her own hand and gently placed it atop his. Li Chengyin shuddered, gripping her hand tightly as if holding the entire world.
In that moment, time seemed to freeze. Only the campfire crackled and blazed on, bearing silent witness to the subtle transformation of their entwined hearts.
