Chapter 25 Everything... Shattered!
Even though the young nurse saw Qin Yi every day, she still couldn't help but stare at him.
It wasn't until Qin Yi spoke that she snapped out of it. "When are you taking the stitches out?"
Blushing, the nurse hurried to remove them. Qin Yi held Su Wan’s left hand with one of his own, while using the other to cover her eyes. With Qin Yi there to back her up, Su Wan whimpered a little coquettishly.
"It hurts. Sss."
"Bear with it, it’ll be over soon." Qin Yi coaxed her as if she were a child.
After the stitches were out, the nurse began disinfecting the area, looking at Su Wan with envy. "Your husband is so attentive to you."
Su Wan smiled at her, while Qin Yi thoughtfully held a glass of water to Su Wan’s lips. "Here, take a sip."
Qin Yi ignored the nurse entirely throughout the process. Unable to strike up a conversation, the nurse left, her face flushed.
By now, Su Wan was in such pain she felt like fainting; the site of the stitches throbbed incessantly. Seeing her distress, Qin Yi tried to distract her.
"Once the stitches are out, you'll be discharged soon. Your easy life is coming to an end..." Qin Yi looked at her with a profound expression.
Su Wan shot him a sidelong glance. "What if you’re the one who isn't up to the task?"
Qin Yi ground his teeth, picked up a damp towel, wrung it out, and pressed it firmly over Su Wan’s face.
When Lin Changchun arrived, he found Qin Yi washing the towel after wiping the face of the newly stitch-free Su Wan, who was lying on the bed. Su Wan’s face was filled with irrepressible laughter, while Qin Yi looked utterly frustrated.
Lin Changchun took a step back and asked tentatively, "Should I come in?"
Su Wan’s eyes curved into crescents as she motioned for him to enter. Seeing that Qin Yi had clearly been rebuffed, Lin Changchun couldn't help but give Su Wan a thumbs up. "Sister-in-law, you're amazing. How are you doing today?"
"The stitches are out. I can go home in a couple of days."
Seeing that Su Wan was in good spirits, Lin Changchun brought up Lin Qisheng. "That animal Lin Qisheng is ruined. Even the doctors can't fix him. But given what he’s done, death would be too good for him..."
Lin Qisheng had been in the hospital under guard during this time; his lower body had been completely crushed. During interrogation, he kept howling that he had been coerced into a confession and was crying out for justice.
Qin Yi narrowed his eyes. Lin Changchun and the others had certainly "greeted" him, but they wouldn't have crushed him entirely. Su Wan had kicked Lin Qisheng, he knew that, but she didn't have the strength to crush him that badly. That must have been the work of that kid, Lu Xing. Thinking of Lu Xing, Qin Yi couldn't help but glance at Su Wan a few extra times.
His wife—no one was allowed to harbor ideas about her.
Upon hearing that Lin Qisheng was facing justice, Su Wan said, "He deserved it."
Qin Yi replied, "Indeed. If he had run into me, he wouldn't have had the chance to live."
Hearing Qin Yi’s firm words, Su Wan cast him a glance, acting spoiled.
Qin Yi gently stroked Su Wan’s brow. "For my wife’s sake, I would have made him pay the price."
Watching Qin Yi being so tender, Lin Changchun shivered and covered his eyes. Qin Yi shot him a glare and handed him the basin and towel. Lin Changchun obediently took them to pour out the water.
He was inwardly overjoyed; finally, someone could keep old Qin in check. He hummed a little tune, happily washed the towel, and was heading back when he bumped into Jiang Boyuan.
He grabbed Jiang Boyuan, eager to share the news. "Old Jiang, Old Jiang, let me tell you, sister-in-law has Old Qin wrapped around her finger. Seeing him unable to voice his frustration, I can't help but laugh, haha."
He then mimicked Qin Yi’s earlier behavior to Jiang Boyuan. "‘For my wife’s sake, I would have made him pay the price.’ Hahaha, Old Jiang, tell me, is this still Old Qin? Isn't he being incredibly mushy?"
Jiang Boyuan looked at him meaningfully. "Changchun."
"Yeah?"
"You're not young anymore. It's time for your family to find you a wife."
After saying this, Jiang Boyuan walked toward the ward, leaving Lin Changchun standing there, completely bewildered, wondering what he had just experienced.
Did he say something wrong? No, he hadn't.
Right, he really hadn't.
But why did Old Jiang react like that? Old Jiang was too cunning; Lin Changchun couldn't fathom his meaning.
Jiang Boyuan walked into the ward and greeted Su Wan with a smile. "Sister-in-law."
Su Wan looked at him with confusion. When Lu Xing had rescued her that day, she had passed out and hadn't seen him.
Qin Yi introduced him. "Wanwan, this is Jiang Boyuan, the brother who has been through life and death with me."
"Sister-in-law looks much better."
"Much better. I can be discharged soon."
Jiang Boyuan and Qin Yi exchanged a look, and Qin Yi instructed Su Wan, "Let Changchun stay here with you; we have something to take care of."
"Okay."
Lin Changchun watched as Jiang Boyuan pushed Qin Yi out; neither of them spared him a glance. He looked at Su Wan and scratched his head.
Jiang Boyuan pushed Qin Yi to a quiet corner and told him the news. "I went to the famous doctor’s hometown myself. It’s remote, and I happened to arrive just as his elderly mother passed away, so I was delayed for a few days."
"Where is he?"
"Leader Yang has arranged a place for him to stay, not far from your home."
Qin Yi nodded. "Don't tell Su Wan about this yet."
"Understood."
Jiang Boyuan didn't ask why; Qin Yi had his own plans, and he didn't want to interfere. "When are you planning to start?"
"After Su Wan is discharged."
Jiang Boyuan looked at Qin Yi, who noticed his gaze. "Something wrong?"
Jiang Boyuan hesitated but spoke up. "You and Su Wan..."
"She is very good, and we are very good."
Jiang Boyuan, having learned some things about Su Wan from Lin Changchun, thought for a moment before saying, "Aren't you afraid she might leave?"
"Fear is useless." Qin Yi thought of their conversation on the day Su Wan went to the market.
Jiang Boyuan looked at Qin Yi. Whether Qin Yi’s legs would ever function again remained unknown. If Su Wan was truly committed to a life with him, he would wish them well. But if his legs didn't recover, and Su Wan—who seemed to be getting along well with him now—decided to leave one day...
Then Qin Yi would fall even deeper into despair, and he feared he might never recover in this lifetime. As a brother who had shared life-or-death experiences, he didn't want to see Qin Yi suffer such emotional trauma again.
He patted Qin Yi on the shoulder and pushed him toward the ward.
Inside, Lin Changchun was telling Su Wan embarrassing stories about Qin Yi. Seeing them return, Lin Changchun made a zipping motion across his lips. He gestured toward Jiang Boyuan with a muffled sound.
"Spit it out if you have something to say, don't play those games," Jiang Boyuan said with amusement.
"Where have you been all these days?"
Lin Changchun let out a long breath. Jiang Boyuan casually uttered two words, lying without changing his expression: "Blind date."
Everyone’s eyes turned toward Jiang Boyuan. Lin Changchun’s curiosity was piqued; he stood up and pulled at Jiang Boyuan. "How is the girl? Did you bring a picture back? Let us see, we'll vet her for you."
Jiang Boyuan looked at Lin Changchun’s clear eyes and narrowed his own. "You really want to know?"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah!" Lin Changchun nodded frantically.
Jiang Boyuan sized him up and said slowly, "Twenty-two years old, six feet tall, dark skin, large front teeth, and a wide gap between them."
Lin Changchun touched his nose. "Goodness, that tall? Isn't that about the same as me?"
Jiang Boyuan nodded. Su Wan burst into a giggle.
Jiang Boyuan then bid farewell to Su Wan and Qin Yi and turned to leave. Lin Changchun finally realized what had happened.
"Oh, you old Jiang! You were making fun of me!"
