Chapter 038: Joining the Seventh Squad
“Let’s not mention those scattered across various departments,” Xia Youyou said. “Just our school’s special athletic class alone has over sixty people!”
An entire class of students, all with extraordinary abilities?
Bai Yuxi broke out in a cold sweat. He had heard that Jiang University had been massively increasing their intake of athletic students in recent years. Apparently, they intended to develop their sports department and had even clashed with Jiang City Sports College over student recruitment. So this was the real reason behind it?
“You’re talking so much nonsense!” Xia Youyou huffed, cheeks puffed with indignation. “Will you join our Seventh Squad or not?”
“We, the ‘new generation,’ are relatively lucky. Under the protection of the LDH, we can safely get through our growth phase!”
“I heard that in the first few years when ‘manifest dimensional convergence points’ appeared, the extraordinary world was in a ‘chaotic period’—no rules had yet been established.”
“Those who awakened then had a much harsher fate than us, who only awakened after the ‘compromise period’ began.”
“Even though now is only the preliminary phase of establishing rules in the extraordinary world, it’s already much better than a few years ago.”
“At least newcomers like us don’t have to live in constant fear, worried that we might become prey and be snatched away in the night.”
Fearing that Xia Youyou’s loose tongue might offend Bai Yuxi and cost them this incredibly promising ‘wild newcomer,’ Drumstick quickly took over the conversation. Patting Bai Yuxi’s shoulder, he urged, “So, how about it? Join us! You can’t survive alone in the extraordinary world!”
Drumstick didn’t elaborate on the true chaos of the so-called ‘chaotic period,’ but Bai Yuxi could imagine the turmoil. Back then, as an ordinary person, he had no access to information about the extraordinary world.
Looking back now, the world had indeed been in chaos a few years ago—natural disasters, ecological calamities, acts of terror, bizarre rumors—emerging everywhere at once.
In hindsight, perhaps the news reports he’d seen then were not as simple as he’d thought. Maybe they were all connected to the extraordinary world.
“If you think our Seventh Squad is too weak for your development, that’s fine,” someone continued. “Come back to base with us at dawn, register as an extraordinary individual, and the base will handle your future arrangements.”
Seeing Bai Yuxi remain silent, Luo Fei exchanged glances with the others and shook her head in regret. “It’s still safer than hiding and wandering alone out here…”
“No need!” Bai Yuxi shook his head and raised his hand to Luo Fei. “Thank you for inviting me to join the Seventh Squad. Please take care of me from now on!”
Luo Fei was taken aback, then smiled and grasped his hand warmly. “Welcome aboard!”
“Woohoo! We finally have a new member in the Seventh Squad!”
After holding back for so long, Willy, the black foreigner, couldn’t contain himself and leaped up, exclaiming, “We have to celebrate with a drink!”
“What’s going on?”
The blonde girl, Maya, exhausted from injuries and battle, had immediately downed a bottle of “bio-energy nutrient” upon entering the Hellfire Bar’s private room and had fallen asleep on the sofa, so she hadn’t participated in the conversation.
Now, stirred awake by Willy’s shout, she rubbed her eyes in confusion. “Is it morning yet?”
They were all young, after all. The group paused, then burst into laughter at Maya’s cluelessness.
Willy bounced on the sofa with his beer, while Xia Youyou, exasperated, swung a cushion at the black foreigner who nearly stepped on her.
Drumstick sidled up to Bai Yuxi, eager to explain the rules and precautions of the extraordinary world, his enthusiasm almost overwhelming.
“All right, that’s enough! Time’s almost up!”
“By now, the LDH Overlimit Squad’s night patrol should be over—we need to get back to school as well.”
“Now, we need to figure out how to get Bai safely back to base without being discovered by any other squads!”
As captain of the Seventh Squad, Luo Fei checked the time on her watch, clapped her hands to quiet the team, and smiled. “Otherwise, someone might try to poach our new member!”
Bai Yuxi sweated—she was warning right in front of him not to let anyone recruit him, so even if someone did, he’d feel too embarrassed to accept.
“Willy, go grab a few gear bags—everyone change clothes and get ready to head back to base!”
“When we get back, Little Ke will need to give Bai a thorough check-up and see if she can make sense of his unusual condition.”
Luo Fei glanced at Bai Yuxi’s personal combat gear and said, “Otherwise, if word gets out about Bai’s ‘supernova potential,’ we’ll be in for a lot of trouble…”
“It’s not about preventing other squads from poaching you or blocking your path to a stronger Overlimit Squad,” she explained, worried he’d misunderstand. “It’s because once it gets out, it’ll bring trouble not just to our squad, but to you as well…”
Bai Yuxi nodded in understanding. He wasn’t stupid. Out of 1.4 billion people in Yan Nation, only eight “supernova individuals” had emerged so far.
Anyone could see how much trouble would follow if news broke about a ninth. His reason for joining this rookie-level Seventh Squad was precisely to avoid such attention.
Luo Fei and the others, too, understood that their “small temple” couldn’t possibly contain such a “great Buddha.” From the start, they’d only played the “friendship card,” never insisting he stay.
If Bai Yuxi joined, great; if not, they’d still help him get through the toughest novice period after awakening.
If Bai truly was a “supernova individual,” his future achievements would be limitless.
Befriending him before his rise could only benefit their squad.
Willy soon returned with several sports duffel bags bearing the Hellfire Bar logo, each containing a complete set of fresh clothes.
