Chapter 068: The Surge of Extraordinary Creatures
“Mutated creatures, you say? They’re just native Earth animals that have undergone extraordinary changes after being contaminated by X particles!” Willy said nonchalantly, “The ones I’ve encountered most often are mutated rats, but the most dangerous was a mutated dog…”
“In fact, the environment in Yan Country is much better than abroad!” he continued. “After all, in Yan’s territory, anything that runs on land, swims in water, or flies in the sky has almost been eaten to extinction by your people!” Willy chuckled. “It’s not like overseas, where mutated lions and tigers roam everywhere. All hail the mighty Empire of Gourmands!”
Bai Yuxi wiped his brow. Was he supposed to feel proud, or ashamed?
“Just last month, Jason’s hometown, Prussia, made headlines!” Willy went on. “They had an outbreak of mutated crabs—a tide of them nearly razed a whole cluster of factories in the countryside! In the end, they had to urgently mobilize all the nation’s limit warriors to quell the mutant crab tide.”
Willy laughed mischievously, “If that happened in Yan Country, I doubt you’d even need to deploy limit warriors. The neighborhood volunteers would have wiped out the crabs themselves!”
Bai Yuxi was taken aback. “Crabs can mutate?”
“As long as it’s alive, it can mutate!” Willy replied. “Maybe the frequency of convergence points has increased this year? There have already been several similar reports on the multidimensional supernet. Mutant lobster tides in Scotland, mutant crab tides in England, mutant carp and bullfrog tides in America, mutant jellyfish tides in Osman… All disaster-level outbreaks!”
Willy scratched his prickly scalp and chuckled. “The only place that hasn’t seen a large-scale mutant creature tide seems to be Yan Country. The only thing rampant here is the population, which is more formidable than any mutant creature tide. When mutated creatures come, they’re basically sending themselves to the dinner table of the Empire of Gourmands…”
Bai Yuxi was amazed. “Are mutated creatures edible?”
“Of course! If it was edible before, it’s still edible after mutating, and even more nutritious… Provided you can kill it, that is! Otherwise, what do you think your ‘bio-energy nutrient solution’ and ‘bio-energy active nutrient gel’ are made from? They’re all extracted from mutated creatures!”
Willy glanced at Bai Yuxi, grinning wickedly to disgust him. “I’m not sure about abroad, but in Yan Country, the only mutated creatures that can be caught in bulk seem to be mutated rats…”
Bai Yuxi’s expression changed abruptly, his stomach churning. He’d eaten plenty of those pale yellow ‘nutrient gels’ in the training grounds…
“Oh dear! I got carried away chatting with you! Didn’t expect this mission to be so profitable!” Willy’s eyes gleamed with cunning. “These mutant frogs are a rare resource—their bodies can be taken back and sold to the base for E crystals!”
Seeing Bai Yuxi’s face change, Willy quickly shifted the subject, his fists clenched in excitement. “Let’s get moving before the other squads catch wind of it and a bunch of limit warriors show up to compete!”
With Willy’s interruption, Bai Yuxi had to set aside his dreadful imaginings for now. He asked, puzzled, “People actually fight over mutant creature corpses?”
“Of course!” Willy replied. “Where do you think we limit warriors get our income? Mutant creatures may be dangerous, but they’re also a rare resource. Their bodies are packed with high-concentration nutrients—muscle, bone, and organs alike are valuable materials for research and for extracting nutrient solutions and source substances. Unless it’s a disaster-level outbreak, as long as the area is under our control, each country’s supernormal agencies won’t let foreign forces seize these resources… Enough talk!”
Willy explained, “Let’s get started. I bet the boss has noticed the abnormal frogs, too!” With that, he prepared to head toward the area where the frog croaks were loudest.
But Bai Yuxi sensed something was off. He grabbed Willy, “Have you ever encountered a swarm of mutated creatures like this?”
“Nope,” Willy replied, confused. “I told you, it’s rare to see a mutant creature tide in Yan Country!”
“So you plan to catch those mutant frogs barehanded? No net, no tools? And once you catch them, where will you put them?” Bai Yuxi rolled his eyes. “Are you sure just the two of us can handle however many mutant frogs there are?”
“Shouldn’t be a problem, right?” Willy said. “They’re all just trash, danger level 0.1 to 0.3.”
“Mutated creatures are different from ordinary animals—if you attack them, most won’t flee. Instead, they’ll actively swarm and attack you!” Willy was dumbfounded, hesitating. “Worst case, we kill them first, then call the boss and the others to drive over and transport them?”
Bai Yuxi looked at him helplessly; he had no way to deal with this foolish foreigner. That wasn’t the point! The real issue was, if mutant creature swarms were so easy to handle, why did Scotland, England, America, and Osman have to mobilize national supernormal personnel to fight them, and why were they called ‘disaster-level’?
He couldn’t believe that steamed hairy crabs and spicy crayfish, once mutated, could be fiercer than jumping stir-fried bullfrogs!
Though Willy had been stopped by Bai Yuxi, he didn’t realize that when he released his bio-magnetic field, he had already alerted the surrounding mutant frog swarms!
As they spoke, rustling sounds began to emerge all around them, and patches of blue lights flickered in the darkness—the eyes of the mutant frogs!
Willy’s face changed. He quickly glanced at the radar interface, seeing the previously sporadic dots suddenly cluster together, forming a glowing band encircling them.
“Xiao Bai, we’re in trouble!” Willy cried. “We’re surrounded!”
“No kidding! I can see that!” Bai Yuxi was beyond words, watching as, from the vegetable gardens and fields beside the village path, huge toads the size of bowls—earthy brown and monstrous—began crawling out, easily numbering in the hundreds at a glance.
“So many frogs! So many frogs!” Willy exclaimed in panic, brandishing his knife back and forth, not knowing which one to target.
Though he was nominally ‘experienced,’ it was only in comparison to Bai Yuxi, who had awakened just a day ago. In truth, Willy had never faced a swarm of mutated creatures like this before.
