Chapter 107: Lionheart Sword, Lion’s Sequential Slash
“Watch out!”
“Yoyo!”
“Stop!”
Bai Yuxi, Rofi, and Su Xiaoke, who were watching from the sidelines, all changed color at once, startled by Xia Yoyo’s reckless move.
As the captain, Rofi instinctively reached for her waist, intending to draw her weapon and stop it, only to remember that they were inside the combat team headquarters, where all her gear had been removed and left in the lounge.
At that very moment, there came a sharp cracking blast beside her. The gust of wind that erupted blew her long hair into disarray, and when she hurriedly brushed the strands aside to clear her view, she could only stare in dumbfounded disbelief.
The scene was nothing like she had imagined. Xia Yoyo had not accidentally harmed a teammate with her lack of control.
Because when Maya saw the rain of short iron spikes shooting toward her, her face changed, and the powerful finishing move she had already been preparing was unleashed at the same time.
The foreign girl’s exquisitely sculpted features took on a grave expression, her slender brows drawing sharply upward. In that instant, she seemed to radiate a fierce, commanding heroism. Then she cried out, “Lionheart Sword, Lion’s Cross-Slash!”
The short staff she had been dragging behind her lashed upward. Light flashed along the staff, and an arcing blade of sword light tore through the air.
Before that first crescent had even finished flying, the raised staff slashed down again, and a second arc of sword light burst forth, arriving first even as it followed after the first. The two arcs crossed neatly into a perfect X.
It must be said that if someone had pressed pause at that moment and snapped a screenshot, the image would have been breathtaking.
But the problem was, this was not the sort of scene one could admire like an anime still. There was no pausing, no taking a picture.
Even worse, just as the two girls unleashed their finishing moves, Bai Yuxi made his dazzling entrance with a crackling snap, and, by the cruelest of coincidences, landed right in the exact center of both attacks.
“Damn it!”
When Bai Yuxi finally realized what was happening, his face also changed drastically. So this was what happened when your reflexes were too fast sometimes that was not a good thing at all.
Seeing Xia Yoyo unleash her finishing move, he had reflexively used a burst of speed and shot out to help intercept the great cloud of iron spikes.
But the moment he landed, there were nearly a hundred spikes flying toward him from the front, while behind him came the howling cross-shaped sword arcs.
Bai Yuxi nearly burst into tears. Big sister, if I had known you had a finishing move too, why the hell would I have jumped out here?
Crack!
Boom! Boom!
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Pew pew pew!
“Good heavens!”
After a burst of chaotic noise:
Xia Yoyo crouched down on the spot, hugging her head and shrinking into a defensive huddle on the floor.
Maya stumbled a few steps and plopped backward onto her rear, nearly landing flat on her back with all four limbs in the air.
Rofi, pale-faced, shielded Su Xiaoke and retreated to the side of the training hall’s entrance, while the dark-skinned foreigner Willy lay sprawled inside the doorway in a twisted, helpless shape, with a short iron spike stuck in his backside, blue electric arcs jumping over it as he foamed at the mouth and spasmed now and then.
“...”
Silence fell over the entire room. Rofi’s expression was dazed as she slowly raised her arm and tapped a few times, then connected the team channel.
“I think you two had better come back here right away...”
Before she had even finished, the glass wall beside them, bristling with iron spikes, cracked and turned from transparent to mottled white, then came crashing down with a thunderous roar.
Bai Yuxi stood frozen in the middle in a stiff, awkward stance, as if caught midway through a martial pose. A spark of electricity still danced over his fist, and the blue lizard that had been perched on his shoulder the whole time smacked its lips in a dazed, adorable way before calmly sticking out its tongue and wiping its eye.
After realizing something was wrong, Bai Yuxi had no time at all to retreat. He could only instinctively drive both fists out to either side.
His left fist, aimed toward Maya, spread ring upon ring of energy ripples and suppressed the two sword arcs that were shooting toward him.
But he had not expected the two trailing arcs to collide with each other on their own and suddenly release an explosive burst of conflicting energy.
Startled into a shiver, his right fist trembled, a thread of lightning flashing along it, and without meaning to, he blasted out a net of electricity.
The booming bolt of lightning instantly blasted the iron spikes out of the air, sending them shooting back with even greater ferocity than before.
After just one exchange, Bai Yuxi knew something was off.
Because those dense short spikes did not have any extraordinary energy attached to them at all.
They had only been propelled by the special magnetic force of the powerful magnetic arm guards.
Even if he had not butted in, the rain of falling spikes could never have penetrated Maya’s superlife shield.
This was... embarrassingly awkward.
“Bai!”
“Little Bai!”
Maya and Xia Yoyo cried out at the same time, “What are you doing?”
Bai Yuxi looked at the two angry girls, then at Rofi, who was standing dazed by the training hall door, and Su Xiaoke, who remained calmly expressionless.
Then he glanced at the dark-skinned foreigner twitching on the floor in a twisted heap, and finally at the shattered particles of glass scattered everywhere. The corner of his mouth twitched, and he no longer knew what to say.
“Someone explain to me exactly what is going on here!”
Hearing Rofi’s question, heavy with restrained anger, the two girls who had just been ready to spring up and cause trouble with Bai Yuxi instantly wilted. With embarrassed smiles, they glanced at each other, then secretly shrank behind Bai Yuxi.
“...That’s the whole story.”
By the time Chicken Leg and Jason, who had gone to the Yunluo Mountain base’s superhuman training camp for an intermediate course, finally came rushing back in a flurry of chaos, the three troublemakers had at last managed to explain the sequence of events.
“Did we... miss something?”
Chicken Leg and Jason stared blankly at the mess strewn across the training hall.
“You mean to say,” Rofi asked, looking at the three of them as they honestly lowered their heads in confession, “you just sparred with Little Bai, and then suddenly comprehended so-called superhuman combat techniques?”
“I’m not sure whether what I did counts as a superhuman combat technique,” Xia Yoyo said with an awkward laugh. “A long time ago, when I noticed Xiaoke had made this pair of powerful magnetic arm guards and secretly borrowed them to play with, I already had a vague idea in mind.
“Just now, while fighting Little Bai, I saw him infusing extraordinary energy into his fingers.
“That made me suddenly think that maybe I could also attach extraordinary energy to the iron spikes and fire them out.
“As long as they didn’t leave the range of my biological magnetic field, the extraordinary energy on the spikes probably wouldn’t dissipate!”
She laughed dryly. “Maybe through supermagnetic induction, I could even further control the spikes after they’d already been launched. And to strengthen my supermagnetic induction, I thought of borrowing Xiaoke’s powerful magnetic arm guards...”
“I’m about the same,” Maya said honestly. “I saw Yoyo seem to realize something, and I started wondering whether I could learn something from Bai’s way of fighting too.
“But I couldn’t figure out how his particle bombardment was formed, so I thought about how, in our usual battles...”
She paused, then said, “In fact, the X energy we unleash is also transmitted through X weapons...”
