Chapter 108: The New Mission - 1
“So that’s when I thought of it.”
“Influenced by the weapon’s material resistance to energy conduction.”
“X energy will remain inside the weapon for only a very brief moment.”
“If, while transmitting X energy, I suddenly increase the energy output so that it accumulates within the weapon, then when launching an attack, release that stockpiled, abnormal energy all at once—wouldn’t that raise the power? And then…”
The foreign girl lifted her hand to show everyone the short staff; the practice staff, with a conduction rate of 0.3, had already shattered to the point that only the grip remained.
“In other words, the two of you shouting with such absurdly dramatic flair—something like 'Storm of Pear Blossoms, Chaotic Rain,' and 'Lionheart Sword, Lionheart Combo Slash'—were just yelling nonsense for an unfinished technique?”
Rubbing his forehead, Rafe said with a splitting headache, “You two really have guts. You hadn’t even figured it out yourselves, and you still charged in swinging wildly?”
The two girls gave silly little grins.
“And you?”
Rafe glanced at Willie, who had been silent for a long time.
The corner of Willie’s mouth twitched. Slowly, his lips puckered, and with a face full of grievance he flung himself to the ground and hammered the floor as he cried, “Why did I understand nothing? Why am I always the one getting hurt?”
Everyone broke out in a sweat, feeling that this probably had something to do with a shortage of intelligence.
Rafe sighed in weary exasperation, thinking that ever since Bai Yuxi had joined their Seventh Squad, the events of just these past two days had outnumbered everything that had happened in the previous year.
“Student Bai!”
Rafe fixed Bai Yuxi with a sharp stare. “Don’t you think you should explain a few things too?”
“Ex-”
Bai Yuxi blinked, then gave a strained laugh. “Explain what?”
He had originally thought this had nothing to do with him, forgetting that the source of all these things lay entirely with him.
After all, there were still several other members who had failed to grasp their own limit-breaking combat techniques. Hearing that a fight with him might lead to an “epiphany” and the awakening of an ultimate skill—how could they possibly let him off so easily?
Cold sweat beading on his forehead, Bai Yuxi suddenly felt that for a long while to come, he might be reduced to the Seventh Squad’s human punching bag...
The summer heat was fading, and the fragrance of osmanthus drifted close to autumn.
During this period, Bai Yuxi felt as though his life had undergone a sweeping transformation.
Yet if one were to speak of what had changed, aside from moving out of the rental apartment into a hidden underground base, it seemed there was not much different after all. Every day still consisted of classes and departures from class, quiet seclusion, and rarely going out...
As a former shut-in with a stubborn work-related illness, and merely a freshman who had only just made it through first year, his relationship with his classmates was far from close.
And the one dormitory brother in college who could truly be called close had, because of the strange illness afflicting him, had to move out of the school dormitory early, which made things feel somewhat distant.
To the point that, despite the tremendous changes happening to him, no one had even taken notice. It was hard to say whether that was luck or tragedy.
Bai Yuxi sat in the library, before him piled dozens of heavyweight academic tomes stacked into towers of books. He flipped through them at high speed while his gaze continually shifted between clarity and haze...
Only now did he finally understand what the genius girl had meant when she spoke so arrogantly of “not even knowing how much knowledge one already possessed.”
The terrifying power of his intelligence-type brain-enhancement special ability was gradually beginning to reveal itself in him.
Even before awakening, his “hyperactive brain” had endowed him with “extraordinary memory” and “exceptional logical reasoning,” granting him astonishing learning ability.
But constrained by his physical condition and state of health, all he could truly make use of was the brief hours of clarity each day, using as little mental energy as possible to master as much practical life skill as he could.
To become a college student who was no worse than the average person had already been his limit. To push further and become some kind of top scholar had been impossible.
But now, with large amounts of biological energy nutrient solution replenishing him every day, his mother no longer had to worry about his studies.
Only when that formidable learning ability was completely unleashed did he discover just how simple learning could be.
Perfect memory, by itself, was practically nothing.
As soon as a book passed under his eyes, its contents were copied directly into his brain.
At the same time, his logical reasoning would run in sync, recording, organizing, classifying, understanding, and then mastering the knowledge stored in memory... what he saw was what he got!
Once seen, he could understand; once understood, he could master!
That near-unsolvable ability to synthesize information was precisely why the members of the Seventh Squad called Su Xiaoke the “Goddess of Learning.”
Compared with the “brain overclocking” ability possessed by the goddess of learning, who shared the same brain-enhancement type, Bai Yuxi’s own “brain overclocking” came with the added function of “perceiving all things.”
This kind of information control ability was not merely applied in combat. Strictly speaking, it was not even meant for combat at all.
The use of millisecond-level resume capability gave him a terrifying computational power that was almost godlike, omniscient and omnipotent, allowing his speed of absorbing knowledge to rise to a level beyond comprehension.
So perhaps the only thing capable of stopping him from mastering knowledge was time itself... After all, whether turning pages or browsing materials online, time was always required.
After flipping through the final page of the volume in his hands, Bai Yuxi closed the book and sighed. “What a pain...”
He stood up, carried the stacks of books back to the shelf, and returned them before preparing to find another set of texts. Just then, a soft beeping from the embedded capsule earbud in his ear sounded.
He paused with his hand still reaching for the bookshelf, then lifted his wrist to glance at the silver watch there.
With a shrug, he ignored the murmurs around him accusing him of showing off, turned, and left the library.
The university had many oddballs, and young people flaunting their individuality with strange behavior was nothing unusual.
He also did not worry about being reported as a monster and taken away by the authorities for dissection or anything of the sort... No matter how powerful the authorities were, could they really surpass the LDH Ultimate Management Department?
Outside the library, the foolish black foreigner was crouched listlessly on the steps, winking and making faces at the girls passing by.
No one knew why, but this guy treated books as if they were tigers. A place as terrifying as the library was somewhere he would never enter even if beaten to death. He claimed to suffer from a strange illness called “bibliophobia.”
Seeing Bai Yuxi come out, Willie sprang to his feet, slapped the dust off his backside, and swaggered over with a roguish grin. He did not speak, merely flashed a few secretive and peculiar hand signs.
Bai Yuxi nodded, slung his backpack casually over one shoulder, and walked with him toward the hillside community where the team headquarters was located.
