Chapter 124: There Must Be Something Wrong with Owen Lu’s Growth
After the explosion, all the police officers surrounding Owen Lu rushed toward the apartment where the blast had occurred. Owen glanced back at the terrified driver. "Did you hear what I just said?"
"I heard it. I was driving you and Portcas past here when a woman suddenly ran out of the apartment yelling 'Bomb!' She only took a few steps before someone slashed her."
"Good answer. By the way, you should say Portcas arranged to meet me, and you were sent to pick me up; otherwise, you can’t explain Portcas' absence in this matter."
The driver nodded repeatedly. "That's right. I'm just an ordinary hired driver, here to pick you up."
Although most of the officers had gone to inspect the smoke from the explosion, one or two remained keeping an eye on Owen. Seeing him so brazenly coaching the driver, yet the police didn’t make a peep, they had all caught the name Portcas.
These names of the wealthy elite circulating among the upper echelons always elicited a sense of disdain from the police. After all, whenever something happened involving such people, a team of lawyers would promptly arrive to negotiate.
Owen Lu, who casually dropped the name Portcas, was obviously someone of similar standing. Since this matter clearly had nothing to do with him, the police naturally avoided making trouble for themselves.
At that moment, several officers carried out a body from the exploded building—an armless corpse, charred black from the blast. Owen snorted coldly and turned away.
He knew in the end it was that guy named Cheng Ming who escaped. Next time he showed up, things wouldn’t be so easy.
In fact, Cheng Ming’s condition was quite dire. Losing both hands was his most obvious feature now. He couldn’t take a plane back home, and operating a car or boat without hands was out of the question.
For someone like him, even hailing a taxi on the street was difficult. He couldn’t just stick out a leg like those beauties to flag one down.
If he did, those grumpy, overweight drivers would immediately crash their cars into him, crushing the blind man under the wheels.
So Cheng Ming had to rely on walking, taking less crowded paths, sneaking away from the explosion scene.
Fortunately, Owen had discovered him. Before setting the trap, the decapitated Xiao Li had helped Cheng Ming configure his phone for voice dialing; otherwise, Cheng Ming wouldn’t even be able to call FutureTech.
“Failed again? Forget it, come back. I’ll send someone else to handle this,” came the cold voice over the phone.
Cheng Ming grew anxious. As FutureTech’s armed force, he knew the consequences of failure. He hurriedly said, "Please connect me to Director Jin; I have important information."
“Cheng Ming, with your current state, you still want to contact Director Jin? Dream on.”
“That Owen Lu is Director Jin’s most concerned enemy. If the information stops with you, you might as well be dead,” Cheng Ming threatened.
After hearing Cheng Ming’s words, the person on the other end snorted but eventually transferred the call. Moments later, Jin Guanyu’s voice came through.
“What information do you have?”
“Director Jin, we’ve investigated. It seems Owen Lu might have assistance behind the scenes. His identity is no longer hidden.”
“Get to the point,” Jin Guanyu’s voice was icy.
“After our last failure, we traced Owen Lu’s movements since arriving in Xinxiang. Though it wasn’t easy, Xiao Li’s abilities came in handy. We uncovered some details, like…”
“I said, get to the point.”
“Owen Lu might be a friend or a favored figure of an important member of the Holy Blood Council.”
“The Holy Blood Council is just a bunch of useless nobodies who didn’t even witness the awakening of spiritual energy. Their favored ones are worthless.”
“But they have money. Members of the Holy Blood Council control at least two-thirds of Xinxiang’s economy. They have plenty of funds. If given the opportunity, they can convert money into…”
“Stop telling me this nonsense,” Jin Guanyu interrupted. “If there’s nothing new, don’t bother coming back.”
“I heard that in Xinxiang, there are people from the old Boxing Association. They’ll do anything for money. Owen Lu must have recruited them.”
“A pack of lost dogs—still lost dogs even after a hundred years.”
Though Jin Guanyu’s tone remained cold, it was less dismissive. Sensing this, Cheng Ming’s face lit up. He quickly added, “That’s what I thought, so I checked further and found Owen Lu visited Chinatown twice, each time seeking out someone known as the Old Sword Immortal.”
“And then?”
“Every time he met with him, Owen Lu received some benefits. There’s something suspicious there.”
“How did he find this Old Sword Immortal? Who introduced them?”
“Apparently, his roommate, a Black man, brought him there.”
“A Black man knows a Sword Immortal? Are you messing with me?” Jin Guanyu sounded angry.
“I’m sure. That Black man initially bought a lot from the Old Sword Immortal.”
“Bought things? What kind of things?” Jin Guanyu was surprised.
“Not sure, but the Old Sword Immortal sells kitchenware.”
“What nonsense. If your intel is like this, don’t bother reporting.”
“It’s not nonsense. The Old Sword Immortal may sell kitchenware, but his skills are formidable. Otherwise, Owen Lu wouldn’t have improved so much so quickly. Remember, he was hit by a truck just six months ago,” Cheng Ming urged.
“Fine. Check the Old Sword Immortal’s background. If he’s involved, look into his motives.”
Given a task, Cheng Ming finally brightened. He knew as long as he had assignments, he wasn’t abandoned. “Don’t worry, Director Jin. I’ll handle this perfectly.”
Suddenly, Jin Guanyu asked a strange question, “Wait, do you know the Black man’s name?”
“That Black man? I think it was Charles.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. I can guarantee the name is correct.”
“Forget the Old Sword Immortal. Focus on Charles. He’s the key to Owen Lu’s growth.”
Cheng Ming blinked, stunned, then let out a “Ha!”
“Ha what? He’s Charles—the Black Superman, one of Future Xinxiang’s top three powers alongside Blood Bat and the Valkyrie. Owen Lu’s transformation is definitely connected to him.”
