Chapter 144: Eagerly Stepping Up to Take the Blame
Seeing Fauster’s grave expression, Ou Xiaolu was stunned as well. He turned back and glanced at Aro, then secretly transmitted, “Yuanfang, what do you think?”
“My lord, I believe there must be something suspicious about this.”
“Hey, what are you two winking at each other for?” Emilia suddenly shouted, just as Ou Xiaolu and Aro were enjoying their little joke.
“Nothing.” Ou Xiaolu shook his head and looked toward Fauster.
The man Fauster was holding by the collar suddenly began to laugh. Pointing at Fauster, he said, “You’re his subordinates, aren’t you? You’ll all die. You’ll live in sorrow forever, never seeing another smiling face.”
Ou Xiaolu listened from the side, utterly bewildered. What was this supposed to mean? Had the man come looking for trouble with him, or with Fauster?
Fauster was not as easygoing as Emilia. His face cold, he simply crushed the man’s neck.
After casually tossing the corpse to the ground, Fauster looked at Ou Xiaolu. “Young man, I originally came to ask you about something. But seeing that your territory has been attacked and provoked, it seems you weren’t responsible. Wayne is doing an awful job. He can’t even manage a tiny place like New Township, and he didn’t know there was such a powerful force operating on his own turf. He’s really gone downhill.”
“Just to clarify, I spoke with Lord Wayne on the phone earlier. It seems someone provoked him, and he was in the middle of retaliating.”
“Then it seems that’s exactly what happened. Boy, would you do me a favor?”
“Go ahead.”
“I came here this time to investigate the cause of my young master’s death. He said he was going out to search for treasure, but discovered that someone had taken it ahead of him. Following the clues, he came to New Township, believing the Holy Blood Council was responsible. In the end, he died here.”
As he spoke, Fauster looked at Ou Xiaolu.
Ou Xiaolu remained expressionless. When Fauster paused, he asked, “How powerful was your young master?”
“The sort who was far stronger than you. If the person behind you came forward, they might be able to defeat him.”
“Oh? The force behind me is extremely powerful,” Ou Xiaolu said confidently.
“And what if it is? How long have you been here? How could you possibly have taken the treasure my young master was searching for? During this period, I had the Holy Blood Council investigate, but they tried to shift the blame onto your enemy—that Future Technology outfit, wasn’t it? They clearly forgot that we have plenty of servants. We may not control the entire city like the Holy Blood Council, but we can still uncover a few pieces of information.
“So yesterday, I made my move and killed the Holy Blood Council’s last chairman. The senior councillors are practically all dead as well. At present, only junior councillors and ordinary members remain. If you want to take control of the Holy Blood Council, now is the best opportunity.”
“There’s no need for that. I came to New Township solely to seek refuge. You’ve seen it yourself—Future Technology is actually quite powerful.”
“Yes, I looked into them. The few people who arrived recently do have some ability.”
“What?” Ou Xiaolu was startled. “They sent more people?”
Fauster did not know why Ou Xiaolu had reacted so strongly, but he still nodded. “They did. Three people in total—two women and one man. They seem fairly capable, though they still cannot compare with our young master.”
“Oh. Then we should find a time to kill them.” Ou Xiaolu nodded, making a mental note of it.
Fauster did not care about the matter and continued. “However, to uncover the truth behind my young master’s death, I still need to organize every clue. That is why I had Carissa bring me here to find you. Your strength makes you one of the more unusual figures in New Township. I never expected that, upon arriving, I would find your territory under attack and damaged to this extent.
“More importantly, I discovered that beneath the Holy Blood Council’s very nose, another force has been operating here. Do you know what this is?”
Fauster raised a finger. A trace of lipstick stained it.
Ou Xiaolu shook his head. He was no girl—how could he identify its color merely by looking at a smear of red?
“This is a drug. After taking it, a person can gain supernatural abilities for a certain length of time. The price, however, is their life.”
“How do you know?” Ou Xiaolu asked curiously.
“I’ve taken it before. If I hadn’t encountered Lord Silver Dragon King, I would already be dead. I never expected to find this kind of thing here. It seems I’ve found my target.”
With that, Fauster turned and prepared to leave.
Only then did Ou Xiaolu react. “Wait! You haven’t finished explaining.”
Fauster waved a hand. “This is not something you can get involved in. You don’t know who this drug was originally intended for, do you? So stop asking questions.”
He strode away, leaving Ou Xiaolu, the others, and the corpse on the ground behind him. For a moment, none of them knew what to say.
Finally, Ou Xiaolu called out to Carissa and pointed at the corpse. “Why don’t you take a look and see whether you recognize this fellow?”
Carissa snorted. “No need. Who is she?”
“Emilia,” Ou Xiaolu introduced her.
Carissa ignored him completely and walked straight up to Emilia. “Ou is mine.”
Emilia glanced at the corpse on the ground, then at Carissa’s neck. “You can’t beat me.”
Carissa snorted again, turned around, and left. But before she had gone very far, she pulled out her phone.
“Hannah, some bitch has appeared beside Ou. Our previous agreement is void.”
Emilia, watching Carissa disappear into the distance, still had no idea what she had just discovered. She looked at Ou Xiaolu in confusion. “Who was that person?”
“Her father owns the largest farm in the area. The meat Aro eats comes from her family.”
“Oh, she raises cattle. A useful person.” Emilia nodded.
Aro came over and rubbed against Ou Xiaolu’s leg, secretly transmitting, “Was that a battlefield of love just now?”
“I don’t think so. Isn’t it only called that when a childhood sweetheart and a newcomer appear at the same time?”
“Do you have a childhood sweetheart?”
“Apparently not. Never mind that. What do you think that fellow’s background is? He actually had the nerve to take the blame.”
“I don’t know. But did his final move remind you of anything?”
“Painting a smiley face on his own face? Could he be a clown? He’s already ugly enough—if he became a clown as well, he’d scare people to death.”
“What if he is one? Still, compared with his identity, I’m more curious about why he attacked you. He said something just now about all of you being his subordinates. Could he have meant us? Have we had any conflicts recently with something like a clown?”
Ou Xiaolu shook his head after hearing that. “Forget it. We’ll leave it alone. In any case, he took the blame for us. Logically speaking, anyone who helps us take the blame is an enemy!”
