Chapter 85: Ouyang Xiaolu Ambushed (15/26)
Half an hour later, O Xiaolu had taken Xiaoyou away from the island of the Tillisha family. The Red and White Empresses had entered a state of enhancement, and with less than five hours they could not possibly complete it.
As for the Warlock, he was now the steward of the two empresses, and naturally had to remain at their side. O Xiaolu could not possibly leave Xiaoyou behind in the Tillisha household, so he could only take her back to Newtown first.
With the Tillisha family acting as an insider, O Xiaolu also learned some rather sensitive information, including the situation with the two magical families mentioned in the earlier documents.
This made his actions far more targeted.
However, O Xiaolu soon discovered that even being targeted would not help him. The moment he returned to Newtown, he was marked by the people of the Arcane Council.
The Arcane Council was far stronger than the so-called Holy Blood Council of the real world. They were an organized magical power, nothing like the Holy Blood Council, which had merely gathered together for the sake of extraordinary abilities.
This could be seen in their fighting strength. Perhaps because they had already decided that O Xiaolu was a major enemy, the moment the council’s pursuers appeared, they said nothing and simply pointed their small wooden wands straight at him.
Green and red lights shot in from every direction. The green all struck O Xiaolu, while the red all flew toward Xiaoyou.
O Xiaolu had no mind to distinguish what effect the green beams had or what the red ones did. He spread out his hand, and a violet mist rose to shield both him and Xiaoyou. Every beam that plunged into it either missed O Xiaolu entirely or was rebounded at once.
The direction of the rebound was not especially ideal, but the mere fact that the beams could be sent back was enough to make the mages gasp.
They all realized something was wrong and hastily layered on one defense after another, but it was already too late. O Xiaolu was not the sort to take a beating without striking back, and these mages were not walking corpses.
After five gunshots, O Xiaolu drew his sword and charged toward the mages who had not been hit. His speed was no slower than the shadows and portals by which the mages teleported.
At first, the mages only heard the gunfire. In Newtown, where machine guns were rampant, revolvers were hardly impressive to mages.
They did not take the weapon seriously at all, but they soon realized something was wrong. After five shots, five mages simply fell. Each had a bullet hole between the brows, and the mages’ defenses had not been able to stop the bullets at all.
Watching the mages’ disbelief, O Xiaolu felt nothing but contempt. Did they think this was an ordinary gun? This was a god-slaying gun that could strike ghosts and spirits. Yet facing such a weapon, they had not bothered to strengthen their defenses. He really did not know whether these mages had muscle where their brains should be.
After killing the five mages, the number surrounding him was cut in half. The remaining ones could not even form an encirclement and instead were pursued by O Xiaolu, who hacked down two more of them.
The last three saw that the situation had turned against them and immediately transformed into streaks of black light, whooshing to the tops of nearby buildings. With a few leaps, they vanished from O Xiaolu’s sight.
Seeing how the mages escaped, O Xiaolu could not help but sigh. “Looks like I need to invest more experience into the Purple Mansion Manual. Raising it bit by bit is still too slow. At the very least, I need to unlock Purple Thunder Sky Escape first.”
At that moment, Xiaoyou came over as well. In her arms she was still holding the Sun Coral Egg, though by now the little thing had changed somewhat; a tiny crack had appeared in the shell, and one could even sense the breath of life within.
This had been the request O Xiaolu made of the Tillisha family: to help him see whether the Sun Coral Egg had any chance of hatching.
The Tillisha family had their own thoughts regarding this request. Just as they had managed to find the appropriate corpse for the Red Empress’s request, they also dealt with O Xiaolu’s by placing the Sun Coral Egg in a special potion and boiling it for fifteen minutes.
Afterward, Hydra told O Xiaolu that the potion had taken effect, and that in about three days the Sun Coral Egg would hatch.
Of course, before it hatched, the egg still had to be held by Xiaoyou.
By now, Xiaoyou had grown used to cradling such a large egg. Standing nearby, she carefully avoided stepping out of the range of the violet mist while watching O Xiaolu clear away the mages’ bodies one by one.
O Xiaolu had no intention of helping these mages collect their corpses. He simply wanted to see whether they carried any useful potions or other valuable items.
After all, if a mini-boss could drop loot, there was no reason for small fry not to, was there?
As for the sirens in the distance, O Xiaolu ignored them. He could sense that the police car already nearby was circling the area, waiting for them to leave.
Having searched the mages and found none of them carrying anything worthwhile, O Xiaolu suddenly had an idea. Turning to Xiaoyou, he asked, “Do you still remember how to get to that building?”
“Near Fifth Avenue, I think. There’s a little path between two buildings. We should be able to find it once we go there.”
“You said they’re looking all over Newtown for us right now. If we go to that building, could we just force our way in?”
“But there are so many of them.”
“So what? My Violet Gauze Robe has grown stronger again.”
As he spoke, O Xiaolu also glanced into the distance.
Xiaoyou nodded. “All right, then let’s go.”
She was just about to lead the way when, after only a few steps, O Xiaolu pulled her into a nearby alley and looked around with a grave expression. “It seems their power has increased again.”
Xiaoyou was not stupid. From O Xiaolu’s reaction, she could already infer something. “You mean the mercury pool in that building?”
“Yes. It’s just that even now I’m not entirely certain whether that mercury pool is still there.”
“It should still be there. That pool is enormous; it’s almost impossible to move,” Xiaoyou said with certainty.
“But don’t forget this is a world of magic. There are far too many methods here for shrinking space. Speaking of which, I think we shouldn’t go looking for those other two magical families. We should go after the protagonist of this world instead. Do you still remember what the man and woman you let out looked like?”
Xiaoyou nodded firmly, but then asked in hesitation, “This is Newtown. There are so many people here. How are we supposed to find them?”
O Xiaolu only smiled without answering and took out a compass. “Look at the needle.”
