Chapter 22: The Daughter Is Gone
A slightly awkward smile appeared on Feng Xu’s face. Li Yunan stole a glance at him, finding his demeanor quite natural. It seemed that this highly skilled scientist was not, as Li Feihu had described, obstinate or unreasonably stubborn.
The car came to a halt in the backyard. Guided by Li Yunan, Feng Xu entered the living room. She opened a door to a small room filled with plush dolls, delicate pink gauze draped around, and cartoon images covering the walls. The room exuded warmth and cuteness.
“Thank you,” Feng Xu said gratefully, his heart softening as he looked at Li Yunan. All he had left in this world was this little girl. If his daughter could live well in the days to come, he would be content.
“It’s nothing. Go see her now—she’s asleep,” Li Yunan replied, her cheeks tinged with a faint blush. In the dim room, her shy expression was hidden, but Feng Xu’s praise brought a secret joy to her heart. Though her cousin’s advice had seemed unreliable, it did bring her closer to Feng Xu.
Feng Xu nodded gently, quietly approaching his daughter. “Now you’re all I have. There’s so much I want to tell you, but you’ll only understand once you’re grown.” A trace of bitterness crossed his face as he quietly lifted the corner of the blanket to gaze at his sleeping daughter. Years of absence had left him wracked with guilt, but finally, he could find some peace.
No one was there.
“What’s going on?” His daughter was his entire world now, yet the bed was empty when he pulled back the covers.
