Chapter Thirty-Seven: The Endless Chain of Quests Is a Trap
After leaving the military camp, Ke Bei returned straight to his own residence. After eating the dinner carefully prepared by Li Qianqian, he went directly back to his room, lay on the spacious and soft bed, and tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
The lonely night was hard to endure. Ke Bei thought of his bearded old father; unconsciously, it had already been nearly two months since they parted. These brief two months had completely altered the trajectory of Ke Bei’s life. Before, he would tremble in the face of the red-haired zombies; now, he could move with ease in the midst of hundreds of thousands of monster beasts.
“Dad, you have no idea how strong I’ve become,” he thought, a smile appearing on Ke Bei’s face.
Thanks to the mysterious system, Ke Bei had gradually transformed from an ordinary person into a powerhouse capable of instantly defeating general-level monster beasts! Although there was still a considerable gap between him and those who stood at the very pinnacle of this world, Ke Bei had only completed three missions so far, and it had been less than two months.
In two months, to go from an ordinary person to such a formidable force—there was absolutely no one else in this world who could accomplish this, except for himself with the mysterious system!
“It’s only just beginning. Before long, I’ll definitely stand at the very top of this world!” With the system behind him, Ke Bei was filled with confidence.
Once he stood atop the highest clouds and looked down over the world, finding his bearded father would be that much easier. With this thought, Ke Bei immersed his mind into his consciousness.
“Why are there no new missions?” Ke Bei stared at the misty system disk, puzzled and worried, furrowing his brow. Everything he had gained today was thanks to the mysterious system, and he would need it to continue growing stronger.
Suddenly seeing that there were no missions, Ke Bei felt a trace of panic.
“Is there a new mission?” He paused for a moment and tried asking.
He waited for a while, but the system remained silent, leaving Ke Bei somewhat disappointed.
“Ding! Host actively seeks missions—Chain Mission System activated.” Just as Ke Bei shook his head, sighed, and was about to exit the system, a clear voice suddenly sounded deep within his mind.
“What is a chain mission?” Hearing the system’s prompt, Ke Bei’s spirits lifted immediately.
As soon as he finished speaking, the misty system disk flashed with golden light, and the six disks where martial arts manuals had previously appeared once again glowed with golden radiance.
“Complete Chain Mission for the Full Scroll of Nine Yang Divine Art. Complete Chain Mission for the Full Scroll of Dragon Subduing Palm. Complete Chain Mission for the Full Scroll of Elephant Strength Prajna Art. Complete Chain Mission for the Full Scroll of Six Meridian Sword. Complete Chain Mission for the Full Scroll of Muscle and Tendon Changing Classic. Complete Chain Mission for the Full Scroll of Pure Yang Infinite Art.”
Ke Bei swept over each of the six slots, utterly astonished and unable to speak.
All of them were supreme martial arts! And they were all complete!
“Damn, how is the system so generous this time?” Ke Bei was practically drooling; he was too excited.
The Nine Yang Divine Art was a peerless internal skill that Ke Bei had always coveted, yet had always slipped through his fingers, and previously only the first scroll had appeared; now the entire scroll was offered!
If he mastered the full Nine Yang Divine Art, Ke Bei dared not imagine how strong he would become—instantly defeating transcendence-level experts would be no problem.
Dragon Subduing Palm—even the name sounded incredibly domineering. Ke Bei lingered over it for a while, then reluctantly shifted his gaze to the Elephant Strength Prajna Art.
Currently, Ke Bei had only undergone the refining of the upper scroll of this art, and his physical strength was already comparable to junior deities. There were still the middle and lower scrolls; if he mastered them all, his terrifying strength might allow him to smash senior deities into pulp with a single punch!
Six Meridian Sword, with its sword energy from afar—sharp beyond compare; a single finger pointed, unstoppable! Too cool.
The more Ke Bei looked, the more excited he became.
“Huff, huff—” Breathing heavily, Ke Bei closed his eyes; he couldn’t look any longer, the temptation was overwhelming. After a while, his excitement gradually calmed, and he slowly opened his eyes.
“Dragon Subduing Palm, Six Meridian Sword—those are martial skills. They require profound internal energy to unleash their power. I can’t consider them for now,” Ke Bei muttered, his gaze slowly sweeping over the six glowing slots.
“Elephant Strength Prajna Art is for refining the body. My physical strength is already decent, so I won’t consider it for now either.”
“So, that leaves three choices: Nine Yang Divine Art, Pure Yang Infinite Art, and Muscle and Tendon Changing Classic!”
Ke Bei pondered for a moment, eliminating three martial arts and retaining three supreme internal arts.
“All three are top-tier internal arts, but which is stronger? I can’t judge—only by trying will I know.”
Ke Bei stared at the three internal arts, hesitating and unable to decide.
“No matter, one cannot have both fish and bear’s paw! I’ll choose Nine Yang Divine Art!” Ke Bei had coveted it for a long time. After a moment’s thought, he finally resolved to choose Nine Yang Divine Art.
“Choose Nine Yang Divine Art!” With his mind made up, Ke Bei declared.
“Host accepts Chain Mission for the Full Scroll of Nine Yang Divine Art!” As soon as Ke Bei spoke, the system’s clear voice followed.
“Mission duration: one year. Three missions in total. Completing the first mission will grant the first three layers of Nine Yang Divine Art. Completing the second mission will grant the first six layers. If all three missions are completed within one year, host may learn the entire scroll of Nine Yang Divine Art!”
“If any of the three chain missions are not completed within the year, Nine Yang Divine Art will disappear forever, and host will never be able to cultivate any other internal arts!”
“Never able to cultivate any other internal arts—what does that mean?” Ke Bei’s heart skipped a beat, a sense of foreboding rising.
“If the host fails to complete the chain mission, not only will they lose Nine Yang Divine Art, but will never be able to cultivate internal arts offered as missions in the future!”
Hearing the system’s crisp prompt, Ke Bei nearly fainted.
“Damn it, why? Why, if I can’t finish this damn chain mission, why should I lose Nine Yang Divine Art, and why can’t I learn other internal arts?”
Ke Bei was furious; the system was too domineering, too unreasonable.
“The Little Li Flying Dagger technique, without internal energy to drive it, its power can’t be fully unleashed. Not only that, but without internal energy, future development would be severely limited! Dragon Subduing Palm can’t be cultivated, Six Meridian Sword can’t be cultivated—so many martial arts can’t be practiced without internal energy! How can this be?” Ke Bei could hardly accept it.
“Host has already chosen to accept the chain mission. It cannot be changed. No right to question. You can only accept.”
“Chain Mission for the Full Scroll of Nine Yang Divine Art: First mission—kill one hundred junior deities within ten days!”
The system ignored Ke Bei’s rage, its clear voice devoid of any emotion.
“One hundred junior deities within ten days?” Ke Bei was stunned. Never mind whether he had the strength to kill a hundred junior deities in ten days—even if he did, where could he find so many deities in such a short time? Would he have to storm the Heavenly Corpse Mountain and massacre his way into the deity’s lair?
Ke Bei was completely at a loss. There really was no such thing as a free lunch in this world, and the system was never generous without a reason.
This was a trap, damn it!
