Chu Tianfeng had only been cultivating for a short while when he heard a burst of chaotic gunfire.

Even without using his brain, he knew what had happened.

“Want to make a fortune?” Xi Yazi’s charming voice rang out once more.

“Not going. There are too many wolves.” Chu Tianfeng naturally understood what she had in mind. When the wolf pack encountered the martial artists, there would certainly be heavy casualties—and plenty of demon cores.

But those demon cores were not so easy to collect. Trying to snatch food from more than a thousand wolves was no simple matter.

“Coward!” Xi Yazi giggled. “Let me tell you this: in no more than half an hour, those wolf corpses will be devoured clean, let alone the demon cores.”

Chu Tianfeng could only smile bitterly. “You think I don’t want to? Those wolves have such keen noses that my invisibility technique is completely useless.”

That was what frustrated him most. His invisibility technique had only barely reached the entry level; it could not even fool a wolfhound, much less these purebred wolves.

“What are you afraid of? They can’t outrun you.” Xi Yazi flashed out of the Soul-Nourishing Wood.

After pondering for a moment, Chu Tianfeng finally nodded. “All right. I’ll go take a look after I’ve recovered from my injuries.”

As the saying went, the bold grew fat while the timid starved. It truly seemed a waste to ignore hundreds or even thousands of demon cores.

A dozen minutes later, Chu Tianfeng’s injuries had completely healed. He drifted down from the cliff and sprinted toward the gunfire.

The battle between the martial artists and the wolves was nearing its end. The gunshots had become sparse, and wolf corpses lay scattered throughout the valley.

Chu Tianfeng quietly made his way through the battlefield, collecting only the corpses of wolves at the second level or above.

The wolves really did devour their own kind. Along the way, Chu Tianfeng saw countless instances of packs tearing into wolf corpses. Some even fought fiercely over a single leg.

No, they came to blows.

Chu Tianfeng had no intention of getting involved, nor did he dare to. When the corpse belonged to a wolf of the second level or above, he would curse the pack a few times as “beasts.” If it belonged to a wolf below the second level, he could not even be bothered to curse; he simply took a detour.

In less than the time it took to burn a stick of incense, he had collected several dozen wolf corpses of the second level or above, and he could not help becoming wildly excited.

There was an old saying that excessive joy invited sorrow. Chu Tianfeng became a little too pleased with himself and inadvertently approached a late-second-level wolf.

Awooooo—

The wolf turned its head, spotted him, and immediately howled to summon its companions.

Only then did Chu Tianfeng realize that things had taken a turn for the worse. He hurriedly formed a hand seal and ran for his life.

The wolf pack responded instantly.

Awooo! Awooo!

In an instant, the valley, which had finally fallen quiet, became lively once more.

At first, only a few dozen wolves chased him. Then there were a hundred, then several hundred. The pursuing army grew larger and larger until nearly every wolf at the foot of the cliff had joined in.

The momentum was overwhelming, vast and thunderous.

Fortunately, Chu Tianfeng was far faster than the wolves. He easily shook off his pursuers, reached a cliff face, and leaped onto the stone wall. In the blink of an eye, he had climbed more than ten meters up.

When the wolves reached the foot of the cliff and discovered Chu Tianfeng directly above them, they surrounded the area and howled furiously at him.

“Oh no, the wolves are coming!” Suddenly, a mature, melodious female voice rang out from above.

Chu Tianfeng swept the area lightly with his spiritual sense and discovered four women on a platform diagonally above him—four masked women.

There was no need to ask. They were the Feng family’s expedition team, led by Feng Piaopiao. Chu Tianfeng even recognized two of them: Feng Piaopiao and Feng Mingxue.

Seeing the four women in a panic, Chu Tianfeng’s mischievous nature took over. He imitated the wolves and howled twice.

“Mother, they’re coming up!” Feng Mingxue was the first to scream.

Ha! Chu Tianfeng could no longer hold back and burst out laughing.

“Who is that?” the mature voice called again.

It was Feng Piaopiao’s voice.

Chu Tianfeng howled several more times in reply. This time, however, the four women of the Feng family understood what was happening. They rolled their eyes and ignored him.

Chu Tianfeng found it rather dull as well, so he drew his pistol. To make his opening move even more startling, he removed the suppressor from the barrel.

Bang! Bang!

Two bullets shrieked through the air.

Awooo!

A second-level wolf let out a miserable cry and slowly collapsed.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Three more bullets shot out.

Awooo!

Another second-level wolf screamed and fell into a pool of blood.

…

The wolves milled about in circles, howling without pause.

Chu Tianfeng continued firing, every shot striking a head.

Before long, more than a dozen wolves lay dead at the foot of the cliff.

Chu Tianfeng specifically targeted the second-level wolves. Naturally, if he spotted a first-level wolf trying to devour a corpse, he showed it no mercy either.

Second-level demon beasts possessed a certain degree of intelligence. Once they realized they could not bring down Chu Tianfeng while their own side continued to suffer casualties, they withdrew several dozen meters and watched him from afar.

Seeing this, Chu Tianfeng immediately drifted down to the foot of the cliff and hurriedly collected the corpses.

The wolves saw him leap down and began howling again, savagely pouncing toward him.

Goodbye!

Chu Tianfeng waved at the pack, then sprang upward and flew back to the cliff face.

The wolves once again gathered at the foot of the cliff, surrounding it so tightly that not even a drop of water could pass through.

Seeing that he had too many corpses—nearly enough to fill one of his rings—Chu Tianfeng took them out, removed the demon cores, and then tossed the bodies one by one over the cliff.

The wolves below eagerly accepted every corpse he threw down. Howling, they scrambled over one another to feast.

After extracting all the demon cores, Chu Tianfeng turned his attention to the living second-level wolves below.

And so the slaughter of the wolves began once more.

Repeating the process again and again, Chu Tianfeng collected more than two hundred demon cores in less than an hour.

By then, he had used up all his bullets, while the wolves below still swarmed thickly, stretching beyond count.

Feng Piaopiao and the others could not see Chu Tianfeng and had no idea what he was doing. They called out several times to ask, but he either remained silent or answered by imitating the wolves.

At last, when the foot of the cliff had quieted down, Feng Piaopiao and the others took out their rations and prepared to fill their stomachs.

Unexpectedly, just as they opened a packet of biscuits, a fragrant smell suddenly drifted up from below their feet.

The aroma of roast meat!

“Hey, you down there! Isn’t that a bit much?” Feng Mingxue shouted, unable to bear it any longer.

“If you want some, come down and get it,” Chu Tianfeng answered irritably.

Hearing a rustling sound above, he swept the area with his spiritual sense and saw Feng Mingxue standing up. He added, “A thousand coins per serving!”

“What?” Feng Mingxue cried furiously. “Are you stewing bird’s nest or roasting bear paws?”

Feng Piaopiao, however, frowned and fell into deep thought.

She was far too familiar with that scent. And Chu Tianfeng had not altered his voice; she knew it equally well.

“Eat it or don’t!” Chu Tianfeng remained oblivious and continued roasting the wolf leg. “I never invited you.”

Feng Mingxue stamped her foot. “I’m eating it anyway!” Then she turned to the women beside her. “Mother, Sister Shuang, Sister Hui, let’s all go down and eat. We’ll eat him out of house and home.”

Chu Tianfeng rolled his eyes. “Everyone, this place is too small. It can’t fit two people, let alone five. Besides, I only roasted one leg. I’m afraid it won’t be enough for all of you.”

Feng Mingxue glared at him. “There’s plenty of room up here. Come up and roast another one.”

“I’m afraid of heights. Truly!” Chu Tianfeng felt his scalp begin to prickle.

“You’re Brother Lin Feng, aren’t you?” Feng Piaopiao suddenly called out. “Mingxue was only being childish. I hope you won’t take offense.”

“Uh…” Chu Tianfeng had not expected Feng Piaopiao to see through his identity. For a moment, he was at a loss for words.

“Brother Lin Feng, come up!” Feng Piaopiao stood as well and waved toward the space below her feet.

Chu Tianfeng had no choice but to put on a brave face, gather up the wolf leg and the other items, and fly to Feng Piaopiao and the others.

“It’s you?!” Feng Mingxue pointed at Chu Tianfeng, her mouth hanging open.

“Hehe!” Feng Piaopiao laughed. “Forgive my presumptuousness, but should I call you Brother Lin or Brother Chu?”

“Either is fine.” Chu Tianfeng shrugged, took out a grill and the rest of his utensils, and continued roasting the meat.

“Hmph!” Feng Mingxue snorted. “You harmed Brother Chang, and I don’t want to eat anything of yours. Get lost!”

Chu Tianfeng froze slightly.

“Hmph! You’ve harmed so many people. Have you forgotten already?” Feng Mingxue snorted again. “Wang Lianchang. Do you remember him?”

Chu Tianfeng suddenly understood. He was about to explain when Feng Piaopiao rebuked Feng Mingxue from the side.

“Mingxue, how many times have I told you? When judging a matter, don’t look only at the surface. You must learn to analyze it.”

Then she turned to Chu Tianfeng. “I’m sorry. Mingxue is being childish. I hope you won’t take offense.”

“It’s all right.” In truth, Chu Tianfeng wanted to say that he was very much offended.

The conflict between the Wang family and himself had already become irreconcilable. When he had been in the Li Family Realm, the timing had not been right, and because he had shown a moment of kindness, he had spared Wang Lianchang and the others.

But Wang Lianchang and the others had never intended to spare him. On the night before entering the realm, they had even launched a large-scale pursuit to kill him.

A dozen minutes later, Chu Tianfeng finished roasting four wolf legs. He gave three to Feng Piaopiao and the others, then took one for himself and washed it down with Monkey Wine, drinking to his heart’s content.

Afterward, he bade farewell to Feng Piaopiao and the others, flew to another cliff face, and began cultivating in peace.

The wolf pack continued to linger nearby, occasionally howling a few times to announce its presence to Chu Tianfeng.

Early the next morning, Chu Tianfeng ate breakfast as usual. He had just been about to sit down cross-legged when he suddenly heard a commotion among the wolves.

Then the wolves threw back their heads and howled at the top of their lungs. After their chorus, they scattered noisily.

Feeling puzzled, Chu Tianfeng slipped down the cliff and quietly followed them.

After running for roughly ten minutes, the wolf pack ahead suddenly began howling loudly. Then came another burst of intense gunfire.

“They’re newly arrived martial artists,” Xi Yazi said softly.

“Indeed.” Chu Tianfeng nodded. He knew they must be the second group of martial artists to pass the selection.

“Hehe, another chance to make a fortune.” Xi Yazi giggled sweetly.

Chu Tianfeng was delighted as well. The martial artists would work hard to kill the wolves for him, and they did not even charge him a wage. Where could one find a better deal?

Thus, Chu Tianfeng circled far around to the flanks of both sides, folded his arms, and calmly watched them tear into one another.

The battle between the humans and wolves proceeded much like the one several days earlier. The martial artists likewise refused to become entangled with the pack. They soon retreated to the nearby cliffs and climbed onto the rock walls to take refuge.

Naturally, the wolves pursued them to the foot of the cliffs, and another fierce battle erupted below.

Chu Tianfeng lurked behind them, freely cleaning up the battlefield for both sides. Whenever he found an injured wolf that was not yet dead, he would sometimes, when in the mood, finish it off with a volley of firebolts.
