The next day, Chu Tianfeng went about his usual mountain patrol.

Fortune smiled upon him that morning; he gathered seven or eight stalks of spirit grass before noon, twice his usual haul.

At midday, Chu Tianfeng found a spot along a cliffside midway up the mountain, cut himself a deer leg, and resolved to reward himself with a good meal.

This cliff rose a hundred feet, affording an excellent vantage—if the silent monk pursued him here, escape would be easy.

Thus, he unhesitatingly took out a table, chairs, and even a massive sunshade from his ring, arranging a makeshift picnic.

Soon, flames flickered, and the rich aroma of roasting meat filled the air.

Perhaps the scent was too tempting, or perhaps the smoke rising skyward was simply too flagrant. Whatever the reason, the deer leg was only half-cooked when several figures appeared atop a distant ridge.

Counting carefully, there were nine in all!

Chu Tianfeng paid them no mind and continued roasting his venison.

A few minutes later, as the meat was just done, the group arrived.

It was none other than members from the Wang, Long, and Feng families—three from each house, including Wang Lianchang, Long Fei, Long Yue, Long Yuanhua, and Feng Piaopiao.

Four of them were at the Xiantian stage: one each from the Wang and Long families, and two from the Feng family!

The Xiantian expert from the Wang family appeared elderly, hair half-white, features gaunt, cultivation at late-stage Xiantian.

The Feng family’s lead elder was a veiled crone, hair similarly white, likewise late-stage Xiantian; the other, a veiled middle-aged woman, was at early-stage Xiantian.

The rest were all at the Huajin stage.

This lineup was hardly enough; so long as Long Yuanhua did not defect, Chu Tianfeng had nothing to fear.

Lately, he had fought six opponents at once several times, all of similar strength, and each time had only further stoked his confidence and courage.

“Haha! Brother Lin, you certainly know how to enjoy life!” Long Fei shouted as soon as he saw Chu Tianfeng.

“Brother Long, I trust you have been well since we last parted. I had urgent matters that day and couldn’t bid you farewell—pray, do not take offense.” Chu Tianfeng slid the deer leg from the spit, placed it on a large platter, and set it on the table.

“No offense, none at all. Just share half that venison and you’ll hear not another word from me!” Long Fei laughed heartily, rushing forward to embrace Chu Tianfeng.

Long Yue and Long Yuanhua remained where they were, ten paces distant from Chu Tianfeng.

“Zero-One-Nine, let’s see where you escape to this time!” Wang Lianchang leapt out, brandishing a short sword, its tip leveled at Chu Tianfeng.

“To deal with you Wang family fiends, I doubt I’ll need to run,” Chu Tianfeng replied, pushing Long Fei toward the table, a mocking smile on his lips as he regarded Wang Lianchang.

“Hmph, if I don’t teach you a lesson, you’ll think the Wang family is made of clay!” With a flick of his wrist, Wang Lianchang swept his blade sideways.

Chu Tianfeng, having already formed a seal, raised his right hand; the campfire suddenly shot skyward, hurtling toward Wang Lianchang.

“Watch out!” the Wang family elder cried, rushing forward.

Chu Tianfeng smiled faintly, his hands a blur.

Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!

A flurry of crimson fire arrows streaked toward the Wang family elder.

He had no choice but to abandon Wang Lianchang and retreat.

A bloodcurdling scream rang out.

Wang Lianchang clutched his face, rolling wildly on the ground, his short sword lost.

Chu Tianfeng leapt forward, planting a foot squarely on Wang Lianchang’s back.

Wang Lianchang’s cultivation was on par with Long Fei’s, only at early Huajin. With Chu Tianfeng’s boot pinning him, he could not move an inch.

“Mid-stage Xiantian?” The Wang family elder broke out in a cold sweat. “Just who are you?”

In the space of a few breaths, both sides had exchanged blows, the outcome already decided before the others could react.

“Life or death?” Chu Tianfeng gave Wang Lianchang a nudge with his foot.

Feng Mingxue looked worriedly at Wang Lianchang, her brows furrowing.

“Hold!” The Wang family elder glanced at Wang Lianchang. “Name your price—if the Wang family can pay it, you shall have it.”

“Hand over your packs first, and then we’ll talk.” Chu Tianfeng stomped Wang Lianchang once more.

Wang Lianchang gritted his teeth, eyes blazing with fury.

Left with no choice, the Wang elder reluctantly removed his pack and tossed it to Chu Tianfeng.

Chu Tianfeng swept all the spirit grass into his ring, then waved the pack at the Wang elder.

Thinking it would be returned, the elder reached out to catch it—only for Chu Tianfeng to toss it directly onto the fire.

“You—!” The elder’s eyes bulged with rage.

“And you.” Chu Tianfeng pointed to a younger man beside the elder.

The youth glared at Chu Tianfeng but dared not protest, hurling his pack at Chu Tianfeng’s feet.

A quick scan with his spiritual sense revealed only clothing and food; Chu Tianfeng sighed and threw that pack into the fire as well.

He then bent over Wang Lianchang, unstrapped another pack from his back.

A search turned up several manuals, some jewelry, a few documents and garments, as well as a couple of risqué magazines.

“No wonder your cultivation is so poor! All you do is ogle women all day—worse than me!” Chu Tianfeng shook a necklace in his hand, kicking Wang Lianchang again. “And you call this sorry trinket a gift for women? Shameless!”

Still, he was not above taking everything of value for himself, sweeping necklace and jewelry into his ring, tossing the empty pack onto the fire.

Long Fei broke out in a cold sweat, while Feng Mingxue’s cheeks flushed red, glaring at Chu Tianfeng.

“Leave a line of retreat in all things and meet again another day. Friend, please show some mercy,” the Wang family elder pleaded with a fist salute.

Chu Tianfeng sent Wang Lianchang flying with a kick. “To hell with your mercy. The only thing I’m showing is my foot. No wonder your Wang family lacks manners—you can’t even tell hands from feet!”

The elder leapt high, catching Wang Lianchang and landing lightly on the ground.

“Hmph! We shall meet again!” He let go of Wang Lianchang and strode off.

He believed Chu Tianfeng had ties with the Long family; if a fight broke out, Long Yuanhua would inevitably intervene. With his skills, holding off the Wang and one of the Feng family’s Xiantian experts would make victory impossible for the rest.

After all, Chu Tianfeng’s movement techniques were too bizarre, and his hidden weapons frighteningly powerful.

Wang Lianchang, bloodied, glanced at Feng Mingxue in the distance; she shook her head almost imperceptibly. He then turned to Chu Tianfeng, snorted heavily, picked up his sword, and staggered after his elder.

“No need to see you off!” Chu Tianfeng turned back to the table.

The three from the Feng family were all stunned, uncertain whether to stay or leave.

“Uncle Yuanhua, Sis, come quick!” Long Fei had already seated himself, eyeing the juicy venison and swallowing hard. “Is there any wine? Brother Lin, meat without wine is no way to treat guests!”

Chu Tianfeng had no choice but to produce a barrel of monkey wine and toss it to Long Fei.

“Mineral water?” Long Fei asked, puzzled. But one sniff and his face lit up. “What is this wine? Smells incredible!”

“Ran into a troop of monkeys a few days back and raided their stash,” Chu Tianfeng replied truthfully.

“Heh!” Long Fei quickly poured a bowl, downed it in one gulp, and shouted, “It really is monkey wine! I’ve struck gold! Sis, everyone, come quick!”

Chu Tianfeng brought out more chairs, gesturing to Long Yuanhua and Long Yue. “Elder Long, Miss Long, please sit.”

Long Yue smiled slightly. “Thank you!”

A flicker of embarrassment crossed Long Yuanhua’s face, but he covered it quickly. “Thank you, brother.”

After witnessing Chu Tianfeng’s earlier display, he no longer believed this man was Chu Tianfeng or his sect brother—a mid-stage Xiantian in his twenties defied imagination.

“May we join you?” To Chu Tianfeng’s surprise, Feng Piaopiao stepped forward to ask.

He glanced at her black veil, a little annoyed. “Makes no difference to me.”

Feng Mingxue seemed about to say something, but Feng Piaopiao raised her hand to stop her. “Aunt Xiu, Mingxue, we have to eat anyway. Let’s just make do here.”

Chu Tianfeng frowned inwardly—make do, indeed! I’m eating venison and drinking monkey wine, and you’re making do?

He kept his thoughts to himself, only taking out three more chairs and arranging them at the table. “Please be seated; I’ll roast some more.”

The others watched in amazement as each wave of his hand produced more chairs.

“Are you a magician?” Long Fei asked, curious.

“Uh…” Chu Tianfeng shrugged. “Something like that.”

It was a handy excuse; he had no intention of revealing the ring’s secret.

“Need any help?” Long Yue came over.

“Could you gather some firewood?” Chu Tianfeng took out more bowls and chopsticks, setting them on the table.

Long Yue turned to Long Fei. “Fei, go fetch some firewood.”

Long Fei protested, “Why me? He asked you!”

“Go on, I’m washing dishes,” Long Yue replied, glaring at him, then turned to Chu Tianfeng. “Do you have water?”

Chu Tianfeng produced a large barrel of water with a wave.

Long Yue glanced behind him, suspicious he had hidden the barrel there.

Chu Tianfeng pretended not to notice, tossing out a whole deer and setting about cleaning it.

“I’m Feng Piaopiao. This is my aunt, Feng Shuixiu, and my daughter, Feng Mingxue,” Feng Piaopiao introduced them.

“Lin Feng,” Chu Tianfeng nodded toward Feng Shuixiu and Feng Mingxue.

Feng Piaopiao seemed about to probe further but, seeing Chu Tianfeng’s lack of interest, sensibly went to help Long Yue wash dishes.

Long Yuanhua and Chu Tianfeng jointly cleaned the venison, then split it, setting half to roast over the fire.

Soon, the fragrant roasted venison was served.

Even then, Long Yue, Feng Piaopiao, and the others did not remove their veils. They ate by lifting the veil with one hand, using chopsticks with the other to bring meat to their lips.

Chu Tianfeng was beyond comment.

He didn’t bother using spiritual sense to check their faces—on Blue Moon Star, scanning a woman’s body with spiritual sense was considered the height of vulgarity.

During the meal, as was inevitable, everyone praised Chu Tianfeng’s culinary skills, and envied his monkey wine.

Feng Piaopiao seemed more interested in Chu Tianfeng’s Tianhai accent, peppering him with questions about conditions in Tianhai and whether he’d encountered the martial artists of Huangshan or Hengshan sects.

Chu Tianfeng had no interest in small talk and deflected her questions with polite indifference.
