Chapter 27: The Reunion of the Three Demons
“Today, no one can save you!” The massive tiger demon glared viciously at the small wild boar demon before him as he spoke.
Hiding in the brambles behind them, Lu Fei didn’t rush out. Instead, he observed the situation closely. He soon noticed several black bristles embedded deep into the tiger demon’s flesh, each one sunk halfway in. He even spotted another black bristle at the tiger demon’s neck. Blood trickled down from the bristles, dripping onto the ground, making the tiger look rather battered.
He then turned his attention to his younger brother, the red-skinned wild boar demon. Blood covered the boar’s body, riddled with wounds and claw marks, especially a terrifying gash at the neck where flesh was flayed open. All of these injuries were, without doubt, inflicted by the tiger demon.
After carefully assessing the scene, Lu Fei concluded that though his third brother appeared gravely wounded, the tiger demon hadn’t fared much better. Those black bristles impaled in the tiger were clearly the result of Redskin’s innate magical ability. Thinking of this power, Lu Fei resolved to ask Redskin to teach him this skill once the ordeal was over.
“Our king, and your king as well, both said the battle ends here…” The little boar demon, Redskin, spoke up, his voice strained. “If you kill me now, aren’t you afraid of your king’s punishment?”
“Punishment…” The tiger demon sneered. “If I kill you, who will know?”
“If no one knows, there will be no punishment…” the tiger demon said coldly, immediately shifting into an attack stance.
“I don’t think you’ll get the chance…” Suddenly, a voice echoed from behind.
At that moment, Lu Fei, having regained his full size of nearly three meters, stepped out from behind the brambles. The sight of the enormous white wolf startled the tiger demon, his expression changing instantly.
Redskin, on the other hand, brightened with surprise and joy at the sight of the white wolf. “Big brother…”
Lu Fei nodded, walked over to stand beside Redskin, and looked the tiger demon in the eye. “What do you think?”
“Hmph…” The tiger demon’s eyes flickered with uncertainty as he weighed his options. In the end, like a villain forced to retreat, he spat out a threat through clenched teeth: “I’ll remember you all!”
With that, he turned and left, not lingering a moment longer.
Once the tiger demon’s figure had vanished completely from Lu Fei and Redskin’s sight, a familiar voice rang out.
“Big brother…”
“Big brother, third brother, I finally found you…”
Lu Fei looked up to see a large black crow flying toward them, eyes gleaming with excitement as it swooped through the forest canopy.
“I’ve been searching for you for so long! Did you hear what the king said…?”
Watching the crow, who hadn’t even landed before chattering away, Lu Fei couldn’t help but sigh. “If only you’d arrived a bit sooner…”
Had the crow come earlier, its aerial harassment would have given Lu Fei the courage to take on the already wounded tiger demon and perhaps bring him down. As the tiger himself had said, what did it matter if no other demon found out who did it?
“Arrived sooner? Why…?” The crow landed, puzzled by Lu Fei’s words.
Redskin, of course, knew what his elder brother meant, but he couldn’t be bothered to explain. Yet before he could avoid it, the crow turned to him: “Third brother, how did you get so badly hurt? Who did this to you?”
“Tell us, and big brother and I will avenge you…”
Redskin, glancing at the crow’s disheveled feathers—many of which were missing—replied irritably, “I appreciate the thought, but you’re not looking so great yourself…”
Watching the pair squabble as soon as they reunited, Lu Fei only shook his head. He was used to this.
But seeing the crow in such a sorry state, it was obvious he’d had a hard time earlier too. As for Redskin’s alarming wounds, aside from the deep gash on his neck that needed watching, Lu Fei wasn’t too concerned. Demons were robust creatures; unless internal organs or vital points were harmed, they’d recover quickly. The wounds on Redskin’s back would heal in a week or so. As for the major cut on his neck, some herbal poultices back home would do the trick.
All beasts could instinctively find medicinal herbs. For demons with awakened intelligence, seeking out common herbs was a trivial matter.
“All right now…” Lu Fei glanced at the sky. The glowing orb overhead was not far from its zenith. He looked to his two companions. “Let’s get moving…”
Both the crow demon and Redskin had heard the king’s command earlier, and knew they were to head to the valley where the battle had been fought. But the real reason for going there was still a mystery to them.
“Let’s go, let’s go…”
“It’s finally over. What do you think the king will reward us with this time…?” The crow demon flew above Lu Fei and Redskin, chattering as he went. “Let me count, we killed a snake demon together, and also a bull demon…”
“That bull demon, especially, was stronger than the three of us combined. I bet the king saw it from the sky. If I were king…”
Listening to the crow’s endless chatter overhead, Lu Fei, who hadn’t wanted to speak, could no longer hold back. “Don’t count on a reward. The king is probably more troubled than you right now…”
He’d barely finished speaking when—
“Why…?” The crow asked immediately, while even silent Redskin perked up his ears.
“Because he’s no longer the king…” Lu Fei began, then recounted for his brothers what he’d witnessed earlier.
“So, the king is now a general. We’re heading to the valley to assemble and set off for a new mountain—the Great Wilderness Mountain…”
After hearing Lu Fei’s account, the crow demon’s beak hung open in disbelief, and Redskin’s eyes were just as wide.
Anyone would be shocked to hear Lu Fei describe such a scene: The king kneeling before other demons, the sheep commander being devoured like a snack, the Lord of Serpent Mountain so terrified he could barely stand…
Such astonishing tales left the crow and Redskin not only in awe, but also filled with dread. After all, if someone could chew up the sheep commander as a casual snack and frighten the lords of both Wolf Mountain and Serpent Mountain so badly, just how powerful must they be?
“Big brother, are you joking?” The crow demon still couldn’t quite believe it, asking hesitantly.
Lu Fei glanced up at him, his gaze calm. “Do I look like I’m joking?”
The crow shook his head at once. “No, but…”
“No buts. That’s how it is,” Lu Fei said, as the battlefield in the valley came into view. “You’ll see for yourself soon enough…”
At that moment, Lu Fei suddenly halted and asked his two companions, “Did either of you see the rat demon?”
