Chapter 44: A Perfect Match

"The little creature has found a spiritual herb..."
Realizing that the small animal tugging at the bear pelt on his body was trying to tell him something, Lu Fei quickly caught on.
"Have you found something?" he immediately asked the long-nosed white mouse.
"Squeak, squeak, squeak..."
The little thing released the bear pelt, nodded in a remarkably human-like manner, and squeaked excitedly again.
"As I thought..."
Seeing its reaction, Lu Fei was overjoyed. He had just gained the favor of the chief and barely neutralized the threat of the bear leader. His storage space was now filled with roasted monster meat, having taken advantage of the Black General. And now, this little white mouse he'd captured by chance might have found a spiritual herb...
Ever since arriving at the Great Wilderness Mountain, good fortune seemed to be visiting him one after another.
Lu Fei was delighted and gave it no further thought. The little creature was clearly in a hurry. With a spiritual herb at stake, there was no way he would dally.
But following the little one underground was out of the question—he was no pangolin and couldn't burrow.
With that in mind, Lu Fei immediately squatted down and looked at the little creature. "I can't dig underground. We'll go above ground..."
"You come in first..."
He opened the bear pelt at his chest as he spoke. The little one tilted its head, seemingly pondering his words, but soon leaped inside and nestled against his chest.
"Stay quiet..."
Lu Fei gently patted its head and whispered, then made his way out of the cave.
The snoring of the crow monster and the red-skinned beast thundered through the cave. Although Lu Fei didn't intend to hide the existence of the little mouse from his companions for long, there was no need to wake them now. The quieter the midnight search for spiritual herbs, the better.
He slipped out of the stone cave without a sound.
Once out of the monsters' living quarters, Lu Fei set the little creature down.
Then, with a quick transformation, he took the appearance of a regular wild wolf, over a meter long, though his fur was pure white.
"Let's go. Whatever you found, lead me to it..."
The little one looked at Lu Fei in his true form with wide-eyed wonder, tilting its head as if in amazement before squeaking and signaling him to follow, then darted down the mountain.
Lu Fei followed close behind.
The little creature moved swiftly across the ground, but it was still no match for Lu Fei's speed. He easily kept pace as they raced down the mountain, heading straight for the jagged peak that Black General had renamed "Wandering Mountain."

The little one kept running ahead.
Lu Fei only paused for a moment before following. Just then, he recalled the Black General and the chief's order forbidding him from leaving the mountain.
But now, there was no way he would stop. He'd already experienced the potent effects of the so-called low-grade Yellow Spirit Herb, which he had extorted from the rabbit demoness of Snake Coiled Mountain. A single stalk had been worth months of painstaking cultivation.
Such a treasure—how could Lu Fei let it slip away?
As for orders from above? Weren't those meant to be broken?
However, leaving the mountain meant stepping out of the "Wandering Mountain" territory, and danger would increase immediately.
Lu Fei carefully followed the little one, moving swiftly toward a peak not far from Wandering Mountain. They plunged into a forest of towering trees, thick undergrowth, and thorny brambles.
Before long, Lu Fei spotted a monkey lying between the branches of a massive tree in the distance, skillfully tossing three fruits between nimble hands. The deftness made it clear this was a monkey demon, likely a night watchman.
He quickly restrained the little mouse trying to run ahead.
"There's danger over there. Let's take another route," Lu Fei said, pointing to the monkey demon playing in the branches.
The little one thoughtfully cocked its head, then led Lu Fei in another direction, deeper into the woods, avoiding the sight of the three watchful little demons.
An hour passed.
With the little creature leading the way, Lu Fei arrived at a steep slope. In the distance ahead, a small patch of green, three-leafed plants stood out.
The way the surrounding weeds, brambles, and even several large trees had been cleared away was evidence enough that the little patch of greenery was being meticulously cared for.
And in the midst of those low green plants, two stalks bore dazzling yellow blossoms, distinctly different from all the other flora.
Lu Fei inhaled deeply, catching a delicate fragrance on the night breeze, reminiscent of the medicinal scent from the Yellow Spirit Herb he had eaten before.
In that instant, he understood.
The carefully tended plot ahead was clearly a small medicinal garden, and those two flowering plants were most likely mature spiritual herbs.
"Damn..."
"This little guy not only led me to trespass in another monster’s territory, now we’re sneaking into their medicinal garden to steal!"
Lu Fei's heart pounded wildly at the realization.
"Squeak, squeak, squeak..."
The little creature glanced at Lu Fei, signaling toward the front, its call barely above a whisper as if aware of the danger.
"Wait..." Lu Fei reached out to gently stroke its head, trying to calm it.
He knew stealing herbs was risky. If caught, the consequences could be dire.
But now that he was here...

With those spiritual herbs right in front of him, Lu Fei couldn’t resist seeing if he had a chance.
Fortune favors the bold, as the saying goes.
If he could manage to steal those two herbs, his path to becoming a demon general would be within reach.
"Let's try. If there's really no chance, we'll retreat..."
With that thought, Lu Fei raised his head and began to survey the area carefully.
If this was the medicinal garden of monsters on this mountain, there would surely be little demons guarding it.
Yet after careful inspection, he still couldn’t spot anyone.
Just then—
"Squeak, squeak, squeak..."
A faint squeak from the little companion caught his attention. Lu Fei turned to see the mouse had somehow slipped into a nearby thicket and was grinning at him.
Lu Fei crept over and, following its gaze, finally spotted something he’d missed before: on the trunk of a large tree not far away, a monkey demon and a snake demon stood together.
Moreover, the two were overlapping, actually engaged in—
"This is absolutely ridiculous..."
Lu Fei was speechless at the sight.
It was bad enough being led by the little creature to steal herbs from another monster’s mountain in the middle of the night, but now he had to witness a monster love scene as well.
Still, with the two preoccupied and no other little demons around, it was likely that only these two were guarding the medicinal garden.
But with two of them, his earlier plan of a diversion wouldn’t work—what if he only lured one away?
The little one was great at finding herbs, but its combat ability was nonexistent.
After watching the "battle" above for a while, Lu Fei pondered his options, then began to dig at the earth with his paw, soon exposing a patch of black soil.
He rubbed his head in the dirt until it was thoroughly coated, then did the same to his body.
Before long, the once white wolf had become a black one; even the crow monster and redskin would not recognize him now.
Disguise complete, Lu Fei whispered a few words in the little companion's ear. The mouse tilted its head, thought for a while, then nodded solemnly and burrowed into the ground.
Lu Fei waited quietly.
When enough time had passed, he swaggered out of the thicket and called up to the two demons, who had just finished their tryst: "Hey, one ugly, one fast—you two really make a perfect pair!"
With that, he turned and ran.
