Due to their military-grade armor, these soldiers possessed a terrifyingly high level of defense, far surpassing even the green-skinned zombies—perhaps only their regenerative abilities fell short. The lead bullets fired by Qin Fei and Xie Nainai scarcely scratched them. Instead, the explosive pack on their chests, which had been glowing green, turned red as soon as it was struck. As the armored zombie soldiers drew closer, the half-crouching Qin Fei instantly recognized their identity.

Weren’t these the self-destructing zombies from Seven Days to Die?

Within the game, these exploding zombies were infamous for their devastating power against structures. Even so, they were exceedingly rare, so much so that, despite being a veteran player, Qin Fei hadn’t recognized them at first glance. Now, as the lead shot hit their chests, the red light on the explosive packs began to flash faster and faster…

“Fall back!”

“Huh?” Xie Nainai hadn’t reacted in time.

Qin Fei roared, yanking Xie Nainai back with all his strength, and retreated behind the shelter himself.

A thunderous explosion tore through the air. The electric grid, barricades, and blade traps in the pit were nearly all obliterated by the blast. Splinters from shattered barriers, severed zombie limbs, and crumbling concrete were strewn everywhere.

The destructive power of these self-detonating zombies was simply absurd…!

A chill ran through Qin Fei as he surveyed the aftermath. None of the other transmigrators, including Xie Nainai, had ever played Seven Days to Die or similar games, so they had no idea how deadly these zombies were. If not for Qin Fei’s quick reflexes in pulling her back, Xie Nainai might have been obliterated, leaving not even a corpse behind.

Though the two of them were safe, the defensive line on this side of the shelter was now virtually paralyzed. The electric defenses were useless, the barricades reduced to sawdust, and one of the shotgun turrets, being too close to the blast, was completely destroyed.

“What do we do now?” Xie Nainai asked, looking at the devastation.

“What do we do? The other sides are still intact. As long as we stay alert, we should be able to handle the zombies coming from this side,” Qin Fei replied. He was right—after all, only one self-detonating zombie had appeared.

The defenses elsewhere remained almost completely intact.

After the previous power outage, Qin Fei had rewired all the electric defenses in the shelter to be on parallel circuits, ensuring that if one area was destroyed, the others would remain powered. To make up for the loss on this side, he dismantled a shotgun turret from another section and reinstalled it here, balancing the defensive strength and making it easier to hold the line.

However, Xie Nainai warned him, “Don’t get too comfortable. I have a feeling there’ll be more of those zombies.”

No sooner had she spoken than two more moving green lights appeared in the distance, glinting in the night.

Damn it! She was right!

Qin Fei frowned at the sight, but immediately sprang into action, switching off the shotgun turret nearby. From his gaming experience, he knew the explosives on the zombies’ chests couldn’t withstand direct gunfire. If the bomb was hit, the green light would turn red and detonate within seconds. Since the turret automatically targeted moving objects, it would surely set them off if left running.

After switching off the turret, Qin Fei raised his shotgun and fired at the zombies’ heads.

“Shoot! Now!” he shouted to Xie Nainai, reminding her to avoid aiming at the chest.

Under their combined fire, one zombie soldier’s head exploded. Because they’d carefully avoided the chest bomb, it did not detonate. However, the other zombie became problematic.

It had reached the edge of the pit and fell straight in. The fall did little damage, but the impact triggered the bomb on its chest—the green light instantly turned red.

This time, Xie Nainai didn’t need Qin Fei’s reminder; both of them retreated to the rear in a flash.

A second explosion erupted, and the pit was completely filled in by the collapsing earth.

Another shotgun turret was lost in the blast.

Now, zombies could charge straight through this breach. Qin Fei and Xie Nainai climbed up to the higher platform, relying on their shotguns and pipe bombs to hold the defense.

Fortunately, after three self-detonating zombies, the subsequent waves consisted only of regular zombies. With grit and determination, Qin Fei and Xie Nainai survived the blood moon.

Once the horde subsided, Qin Fei decided not to repair the shelter any further—the attacks were only becoming fiercer. Despite all his preparations, this blood moon had nearly overwhelmed them. He suspected the final wave would be impossible to withstand with these defenses alone.

They needed to find a sturdier, more defensible structure to hole up in.

After all, in the final wave, their only goal was to survive until the fiftieth day. There was no need to kill every zombie—just hold out long enough. Even being surrounded didn’t matter, as long as they lasted; when the time came, they could return to the real world.

Packing enough food, water, and other essentials, they prepared to leave the shelter.

Qin Fei also salvaged some useful items from the defeated zombies:

[Timed Bomb: This shaped charge deals highly concentrated damage. It arms when struck and detonates automatically after five seconds.]

This bomb was retrieved from the chest of the zombie soldier they’d managed to kill without detonation. Qin Fei also claimed a set of military armor from the corpse:

[Military Armor: Ballistic armor made from military-grade synthetic fibers—tough, yet lightweight.]

Xie Nainai, just over 1.6 meters tall, was too petite to wear the armor, so Qin Fei took the entire set. Compared to the crude scrap metal armor he’d worn before, it was a vast improvement—stronger and much lighter.

After a brief discussion, Qin Fei and Xie Nainai decided to head for the Pais Camp in the neighboring town. If it hadn’t fallen yet, joining them for the final wave of the zombie horde would be their best option.
